Gerry Gruen was my fathers best friend and even as young children, we Jones kids were aware of how much they enjoyed each others company. I have a memory of them standing together towards the back of what AR called "Gerry's Parade Car" as Gerry put the key in the special key hole and the car top folded like magic into the trunk. Laughter and where to take it for a spin closely followed. Gerry Gruen was a rare and original man who shared his true self with so many of us fortunate people.

Just knowing that Gerry Gruen is gone from this earth fills me with sadness. I like my siblings were lucky to experience summer camp at sucker brook for many years! From the erecting of the tents, to the wierwolf hunts, the great fires, swimming in the waves of Lake Michigan, and fabulous army stories, it was family fun that will never be forgotten. I am sure that Gerry and AR are together reunited at last, swapping stories and laughing! His memory lives on in all of us he touched.

Like my sister Christine, I fondly remember trips to Sucker Brook in Port Washington which included rides on his old Tractor, the planting of Oak Trees including one known as the Jones Oak and the endless supply of Sheboygan sodas in a variety of flavors in an aluminum tub with large chips of block ice. Sailing on Lake Michigan followed by a trip to the DQ at Port Washington Harbor for ice cream. In later like, he shared his poems many up-roaringly funny about aging. One his best, an Ode to Kay Jones' Jam is in my cookbook to this day.

Gerry Gruen created character building fun for me and other kids on the beach at Sucker Brook on Lake Michigan,. We prepared sticks in fire to hike up the beach with him as he tried to scare out a wierwolf, that he had supposedly seen many times in the fog of early morning.
He provided a tub full of endless soda pop for us to drink all day, a luxury never possible at home. And he was always available with questions about the origin of beach rocks, glass, drift wood and other beach walk finds. His speculations were generally poetic, tales of the bizarre possiblities of the lake and those who traveled it on boats and were always delivered with a twinkle in the eyes to our delight. I will miss knowing his spirit is in the world near the lake he loved.

Enjoyed the company of the Gruens on many trips to the Shaw Festival. Sorry to hear of Gerry's passing.
