JIM HICKS

September 20, 2019

I worked with Jim for many years at the Brevard Job Link Center in Brevard County, Florida. He and several others would play golf together. What a sight to see Jim pop a drive down the center of the fairway.

Jim and I often rode together and he noticed the clubs I was playing with and inquired as to their origin. I said they were my fathers and my dad bought them in 1956. I used them in memory of my father.

As we met in the parking lot to start a round of golf, Jim asked me to come to his car, because he had something to show me. Looking in the trunk of his car was a complete set of clubs, metal woods 1,3,5 and a full set of irons 2 thru pitching wedge. He asked me if I would play a round with them rather than using my fathers clubs, and so I agreed.

He told me he had made the set himself asking me how they felt. By the fourth hole I was sold! They were perfectly balanced. I ask how much he wanted for them and that I would buy them. Jim told me, that what ever the price he placed on them, that I would agree to pay the exact amount. We rode on... A couple of holes later, I told him, I hesitated not because I didn't trust him, or that I thought he would be unfair, but that I worked too long with him not to know that he was up to something. We both laughed... Then Jim said do you agree to my terms, that you will accept the price I place on the clubs? I agreed.

Then Jim said to me, " I am well aware that these clubs that I made for you will replace your dads set of golf clubs, and that to replace your dad's clubs is priceless. Therefore my cost to you is nothing, We drove on and finished the round and Jim had sold me the set of clubs that replaced my fathers set.

As I write this, tears come to my eyes as I think of your, husband, father grandfather and friend. Jim was just the kind of person that you hope to meet during a persons lifetime.

'Thank JIM.

What an amazing person and mentor. I'll miss his witty sense of humor, how he can hold a room with his radio -like voice and his laugh. I'm honored to have know him, worked along side him and called him a friend.
