To the family of Pfc. Jason F. Lemke:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

It is hard to explain Memorial Day to a bunch of kids that have never experienced the death of someone close, let alone, someone they don't know. I am a 2nd Grade teacher in Jason's hometown. I do not know Jason. Matter of fact, I only know of him through the Map of the Fallen. If there is one thing I want my students to learn, it is a sense of community. I struggle with this concept because it can only truly be learned by example. Private Lemke has given a great gift to my students. He ensured the security that allows them to stay innocent. For that, I can only hope, with time, they understand the sacrifice that he and many like him have made for their safety. I wish for them to understand that they are free to draw with sidewalk chalk, walk to school, and play with their teammates at McCarty Park without fear or pause because Private Lemke stood up to protect our way of life. On this Memorial Day, I will pray for Jason and his family for his service to our country and positive impact on our community.

I should have written in this much earlier, but I just found it. My deepest and sincerest condolences to Jason's family, and everyone else who was privaleged enough to have known him. Jason wasn't just my friend, he was a great friend. I never had a brother but Jason was very close. You always knew he was there for you. I could fill volumes with paintball stories of him. Even though it's been over a year, I still feel the way I did the day I found out. I had spoken with him just days before he died and we were planning for his return. The shock that he isn't coming home hasn't worn off. Neither has the anger that someone took the life of my friend. The world, at least my little part of it, truly seems emptier without Jason in it.

I miss my friend.

Love ya, bro.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jason, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

It's been a year since the terrible, life altering and life ending moment we lost an amazing hero. Enigmatic and always following his own path, he grew up but was always the same. I miss my friend, the friend I can only get into trouble with in my dreams.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart CPL Lemke. You were honorable even before your rank.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

My nephew Petty officer Jason D. Lewis was K.I.A. July 6th 2007. Our Jason left a wife and 3 small children also. I won't tell you time will make it better, every day its like we found out yesterday. My heart and prayers go out to your family. Our Jason like your Jason had one sister. We take pride in knowing that these proud heros died doing what they believed in. To Pfc.Jason F. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Lemke and family,
I knew your son, Jason, for a brief amount of time. Yet I can say with all honesty that he was one in a million. He would call me up when he was out in his truck and waiting for every one else to stop drinking because he was the designated driver. He told me stories about how he irritated the MPs of Fort Lewis by his PA system in his truck. He was not a close friend of mine because we never had the chance to get to know each other on that level....but he was a good friend and always said hi to me and that he was alright when he came back from missions. Other than that he talked about nothing more than getting out of the service and coming back to Wisconsin to be with his daughters.

I just wanted to leave a note letting you know what a joy your son was to be around. My husband served with him in 2-23, and I've had the pleasure of being in his company on more than one occasion. I just want to let you know that I know that my family will never forget him. God bless you all, and may God help you find peace.

I am so sorry for your loss. Every time I read or hear about a soldier who has been killed, I feel the familiar stab in my gut. My son, Sgt. Jason W. Vaughn, was also in the Stryker Brigade. He was killed 10 May 2007. When you have a chance, check out www.taps.org. I went to a grief seminar they held at Ft. Lewis, and it was helpful. May God richly bless you! I'm not going to share any platitudes with you, 'cause I'm still struggling. All I can say is that I know the anguish you are going through, and I'm sorry another family has to feel the hurt.

“For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” 2 Corinthians 5:1 (NKJV)

The coffin, housing the “tent” in which your dear son once resided, was placed on the funeral bier. In the background, you heard the gun salute followed by “Taps.” Most of us have heard this tune. However, few are aware of the words that go with this most familiar melody. Here are the words as they are known to me. (There are many variations.):

TAPS

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the hills, from the lakes, from the sky.
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.

Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor,
God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.

Love, good night, Must thou go,
When the day, And the night
Need thee so?
All is well. Speedeth all
To their rest.

Thanks and praise, For our days,
'Neath the sun, Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh.

Your dear son’s “tent” has been destroyed. But, as the Apostle Paul said in 2 Cor. 5:1, God has a better plan for us. The “tent” that once housed your precious son’s soul has been replaced by something far better than a “tent.” It is a building not made with hands.

On this earth, your soldier’s duty and day is done BUT, “All is well, safely rest, God is nigh… As we go, This we know, God is nigh.” Thank you for your son’s service.

The proud father of a soldier in Iraq and a retired military veteran,

My name is Andrea Sweet (Sclavensky) I graduated with your son in 1996, I am so very sorry for the loss of your son. Mr. & Mrs. Lemke,

I can't begin to tell you how deeply sorry I am to learn of the death of your son Jason. I met Jason only once - at Ft. Benning when he graduated basic at the same time as my son David. Jason and David also went to Ft. Lewis, then Iraq at the same time as well. When I met Jason I was impressed by what a fine young man he was, and my son tells me that Jason was highly regarded by the men who served with him - a good man who will be greatly missed.

Our hearts are with you in sorrow.

To the family of Jason Lemke: It has been since '93 when I saw Jason. My son,Daniel Gilmartin was a good friend of his. He had the best smile and manners. I enjoyed it when the "guys" stopped in for chocalate chip cookies. God has a good man in his Army. Susan Raufman-Remington informed us. God bless you-my prayers are with you.

To the family of Jason Lemke,
My heart goes out to all of you at this time. I cannot imagine the feelings that you are having; my prayers are with you. I am a high school classmate of Jason's. Although I didn't know Jason very well, he always seemed to have a smile on his face whenever I would see him. I pray that the Lord is with you and helps you through this time of sorrow.

Sincerely,

Greg,
I saw Jason's name on Good Morning America. I researched and discovered to my great sorrow that he was your son. My heart goes out to you and your family.
You may not remember me, but we were friends when we worked at Shopko in Green Bay. I have a daughter your son's age, and I can not imagine your grief.
Love always to an old friend.

To the Lemke Family,

As a "Gold Star" Father of Cpl Rachael L Hugo, USAR Combat Medic KIA on Oct 5, 2007 in Bayji, Iraq I know first hand how you feel.

Jason's passing hurts me as badly as my own daughter's passing. If you EVER need a shoulder to lean on, I am only an email away.

I would like to share this poem with you, as it brought a lot of comfort to my wife Ruth and I...

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The Soldier stood and faced God
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining
Just as bright as his brass.

"Step forward you Soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The Solider squared his shoulders and said
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't
Because those of us who carry guns
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work on Sundays
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just to steep,

And I never passed a cry for help
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, you Soldier,
You've borne your burden well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

HOOAH Jason Lemke! Thank you for your sefless service to my family and our country, and may God bless you and your family!

I was pretty close to Jason before he deployed, I remember taking him to the inside go cart racing where he kicked my butt and then we headed to play some putt putt golf, it was two things he wanted to do before he left. I was surprised when he got a cell phone in Iraq, and I was able to send him txt msgs. He was always fun loving and kooky to be around, plus he played a good game of pool, put me to same a few times. it hit me hard when I heard. My prayers are with his family and friends.he will be missed greatly.

Pastor Paul Horn

January 17, 2008

Jason and I were classmates at Wisco. Although I did not know him as a close friend, I do know that he was a baptized child of God. Brought to saving faith through water and the Word, Jesus made Jason his child. You know that these words of Jesus apply to your son Jason, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die." (John 11:25,26)

Rejoice today! Take comfort that Jesus won the victory for Jason through his death on the cross and his resurrection from the grave.

With confidence, you and I, along with Jason can say with the Apostle Paul, "The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen!" (2Timothy 4:18)

I haven't seen Jason in many years, but I will never forget the perpetually smile he had on his face in high school, and the way he always made me laugh. Although I haven't met his family, I am truly sorry for your loss. He is safe now, and waiting patiently to be reunited with his loved ones when God decides it is time. Bless you.

I did not know Jason...your son, your brother, your husband, your father, however, as I drove home from work on Tuesday, I noticed all the flags. All the people standing at attention and suddenly I felt this overwhelming feeling of loss. A lump formed in my throat. A tear fell. Every time you see a bright star shining brightly in the sky, let it remind you of Jason and how he is looking down over us all, still standing guard.

I can only imagine how you’re family feels. It will be hard for everyone who knew you to accept that you will never be able to show off that smile, sit down with us and just hang out or look over our shoulders while playing solitaire and tell us a move we missed. I never thought that it would happen to you. I took for granted you being here with us . I even took for granted the phone calls . Always thinking I’ll see him when he comes home. Well now you’ve gone home. And I will miss you. Watch over all of us. Most of all watch over those beautiful girls of yours. We love you J ! Thank You for being you.

Mom and Dad,

I am sorry to hear of Jason's death. Thank you for raising a son in the name of Christ, knowing that he was not yours to keep. I pray that you find comfort in knowing that our Father has watched over him the last 30 years of his life, and there was a reason for his homecoming. I wanted to say more but words cannot express what I want to say, so I will give you a great big hug from Jill :)

To Jill and Jerrie,

Gone are the days of hugs and tears. Jason would want you to remember all the fun times you had and remember that he loved you at your best and worst. My fondest memories of Jason were him, and a group of certain other boys, starting the biggest prank in school history. Mr Class Clown, but with the biggest heart. We used to hear the stories of his fun in the aftermath of a paintball war, who won and how much duck tape it took to win. I pray that God will keep you guys in the palm of his hand and bless you as you try to slowly get through this time. I also want to thank you guys for supporting Jason in his journey through life, though too short. He will be remembered as a HERO to many, as we are in america today, because of friends like Jason. I love you guys and will see you soon!

To the entire Lemke family; My deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to all of you. I know how close you all were to one another. I thank you for allowing me to have a small part in his life, and the opportunity to remember him with you. Everytime I look back at all the memories he's given me, I'm torn with laughing and crying. He always had a way of making me smile, and I miss that so much. I pray you all have comfort in your hearts from the memories he's given you.

To the Lemke Family,

I do not know you. I saw Jason's obit while looking for a friend of mine who just died.

I feel the need to write to you to let you hear from someone who only knew Jason as "A fallen soldier." A young man who put his life on the line so that I can have the many freedoms this country offers me. A man who stayed awake, fighting so that I could sleep soundly each night. A man who put words into action and faith beliefs into caring for one's neighbor -- even the neighbors he never met.

Thank you Jason. You may not have received the acknowledgements in this life but our Loving and All Good Lord will mightily bless you in His kingdom.

To Jason's family, I offer you my most hearlfelt thanks and deepest sympathy. Nothing will take the pain of loss from you but the bond of love will grow in that empty space as a loving tribute to your son. Thank you again, so very much for the gift of Jason.

To the family of Jay. You don't know me. My name is Stephanie Marciante. I knew your Hero. He was a friend of my husbands, CPL Luigi Marciante Jr. They were in the same unit. Both me and my husband were stationed at Fort Lewis. Jay was a good friend to my husband. I got to know him very well. Jay would always come over our apartment to help us out with computer stuff, because we were no good and he knew everything. He would always mess around with me in Arabic language becuase I myself had already taken a tour in Iraq and knew some of the language but not as good as him. He was a great friend to me and my husband. I was so very saddened to hear about your loss of Jay. He was a friend to me and Luigi. I can remember when my husband would have CQ duty over nite and I would go visit him, I would find Jay watching movies with Luigi to keep him company. Know this, Luigi definately gave Jay a Heroes welcome in heaven, I know he did. And know that Jay has a good friend up there, who he will forever be with. I hope you find comfort in the memories of Jay. He was a great friend and a Hero to us all. Thank you for your sacrifice.

With the deepest regret, I have just learned of the death of Private First Class Lemke. As a Vietnam Veteran and the State Chaplain of the Georgia Society, Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and the more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. This precious life, lived and lost in love of America, epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… the family of one of America's best ...!!!
