John Calteaux Obituary

Calteaux, John Aloysius Of New Berlin, Wisconsin. Age 78 years. Having completed his service on earth, John was suddenly called to heaven from his home on Monday January 25, 2016. John is survived by and was wholly dedicated to his beautiful bride Helen Margaret (nee Hunt) of 55 years. The inscription on their wedding bands, "Thy Will Be Done," epitomized his commitment to the covenant of marriage. John was the wise and loving tutor of life and faith to the five children he raised with his wife in Bay View, Wisconsin: Michael John (Sandra), Margaret Mary (John C. Damrow), Mary Elizabeth (Kurt A. Podlogar), Anne Marie (Thomas A. Dougherty II), William Joseph (Julie). Known lovingly as "Papa," he shared the wonder of God's creation and the joy of life with his eleven grandchildren: Elizabeth, Alexandra, James, and Victoria Calteaux; Michael (Amy), Jeffrey and Catherine Podlogar; Thomas, Megan, John "Jack", and Mary Carol Dougherty. The grandchildren could count on "Papa" to be a supportive fan as they participated in their many activities. He rejoiced in the recent first birthday of his great-grandson Louis Vaughn Podlogar. John is the son of Mary (nee Garvey) and Aloysius "Al" Calteaux of Bay View, Wisconsin. He is predeceased by his sisters Margaret "Mickey" (Robert) Adlam, and Joan Calteaux as well as his brother-in-law William J. Hunt. He is survived by his sister Kathleen (Quentin) Swain, aunt Virginia (Joseph) Garvey, cousin John (Anne) Garvey, sister-in-law Marilyn (David) Smerken, other relatives and many friends. After graduating with an Electrical Engineering degree from Marquette University in 1959, John served his country as a Marine Corp communications officer in the Reconnaissance Battalion of the First Division until 1962. He then began a 38-year career in marketing management at Allen-Bradley and eventually retired from Rockwell Automation in 2000. The company's landmark four-faced clock is fondly known as "Papa's clock" to his grandchildren. After retirement, John's membership in the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center provided the opportunity to take the helm of a 27-foot Soling as captain and share his love of being on the waters of Lake Michigan with countless family members and friends. Another simple pleasure was savoring milkshakes when gathered with his loved ones; his favorite flavor was chocolate malt. John proudly wore his bright red USMC hat which frequently resulted in a greeting of "Semper Fi" from fellow Marines. John's favorite motto was AMDG (Ad majorem Dei gloriam), "For the greater glory of God", and lived his life as an example of God's love. He attended the Immaculate Conception parish school in Bay View and later served in leadership positions at Saint Veronica's parish where he helped remodel the church and the school where all of his children and some of his grandchildren attended. John was a proud graduate of Marquette University High School and as an alumnus of Marquette University faithfully cheered on their basketball team for many decades. For the last seven years, he was a parishioner of Saint Mary in Hales Corners. John's quiet, thoughtful charitable work included supporting EWTN, Heart of the Nation broadcasts of Sunday Mass, Catholic Relief Services and archdiocesan missions especially in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Visitation SATURDAY, February 6, 2016 from 9:00 to 10:45 AM at SAINT MARY Catholic Faith Community, 9520 West Forest Home Avenue, Hales Corners, Wisconsin. Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 AM. Private interment at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

I admired John for his wonderful relationship with others. Whenever I saw him, he was always positive and smiling. He was such a devoted caregiver for his wife, Helen, taking her so many places--Masses, lectures, celebrations. He surely was a caring parent, also. He will be missed. I'm sure he will rest in peace.

John was a dear friend since our high school and college days. (John, Jim Skroski and I carpooled to Marquette U.) He was a true model of a Christian man, who treated everyone with respect and concern. I enjoyed my lunches with John and Helen, during my frequent visits from CA to WI.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to Helen and their children and grandchildren!

John, you will be sorely missed!
