Jonathan Safran Obituary

Jonathan S. Safran

Mequon - Died May 18, 2020 at the age of 62. Jon lived with a cancer diagnosis during the last five-and-a-half years, and he did so with grace and dignity, showing more concern for those around him than himself. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Dawn; children Hannah and Ethan; brother Dan (Cindy); niece Samantha; and father Richard. Jon was preceded in death by his mother Lois (Vogel) Safran. He is also survived by cousins, community friends, and cherished Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity brothers.

Jon was born in Glen Clove, New York. He spent much of his childhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he was an Eagle Scout and a high school valedictorian. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business with distinction at Indiana University Bloomington in 1980; there, he was also elected a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. He earned his Juris Doctor at the University's Maurer School of Law in 1983.

For more than 35 years, Jon helped thousands of people navigate personal injury and civil rights law in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin. He always strove for justice, especially for the disenfranchised and underserved. Through his practice, Samster Konkel & Safran, S.C., Jon settled numerous police civil rights cases and became one of the state's leading experts on civil rights.

In addition to his accomplished legal career, Jon was an active presence in his community. He was a former board member of the American Juvenile Arthritis Organization and YMCA Camp Mattawa; a Past President and Executive Board Member of the Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce; a volunteer on multiple Mequon-Thiensville School District committees; a fellow with the American Bar Foundation; a member of the Community Coalition for Quality Policing (CC4QP); and the 2017 Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.

Jon was also a lifelong camping enthusiast. This began in his childhood, when he camped across America's famous national parks. He rekindled this interest in recent years and reveled in the idea of spending a long weekend at his family's favorite campground, Wagon Trail, in Door County.

Due to the current health crisis, his memorial service will be a private family affair. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Mequon-Thiensville Education Foundation.

I just learned about this very sad news... Jonathan was one of the kindest souls I have ever had the pleasure to cross paths with. Jonathan and Dawn visited my family place in Italy and my family had the pleasure to meet and spend time with both of them. Jonathan, you will be missed but you will forever live in our hearts.

Jon Safran dearly loved his family. He also loved practicing law, and ensuring that whether the situation involved a personal injury or an abridgment of one's civil rights, neither who the client was, nor their zip code determined whether or not they received a fair shot at justice. He was tenacious, meticulous, and compassionate in his practice.
The Artison Family extends our deepest sympathies to Dawn, Hannah, and Ethan.

Jon and I met in 1984 when we both worked at Daniel Kondos' law firm. We stayed in touch over the years and I referred any number of people to who his knowing they would receive excellent care. Thoughtful, caring, thorough, and never backed down from a fight. He was my colleague and friend and I miss him.

Jon was the most decent person I met in my years in the Wisconsin legal community. He was an incredibly hard worker, a person who truly believed in justice and did everything in his considerable power to make our legal system live up to its promise. Ill miss Jon a lot. Sending my condolences to his family and friends.

I am so sorry to hear of Jon's passing. I worked for Jon back in the late 80s He was a kind, patient and down to earth boss. He treated his staff more like friends than employees and I always felt respected and part of a team. I am especially grateful for a gathering he had at his home where I met Dawn and her famous spinach balls! She generously shared her recipe and it has been a party staple all these years! I could see then what a loving, happy loving couple they were. Rest in peace Jon after a life well lived.
Sincerely, Suzanne Jenkin

Jon was GOOD person. The best compliment I can give him. He was descent, kind, respectful, intelligent, benevolent---his goodness shined through in all his efforts to help others. He made a difference. He loved and supported his family; he was devoted to fighting injustice; he supported his community; he helped make this world a better place. The Silver Family sends our heartfelt sympathies to Dawn, Ethan and Hannah. He will be missed. Sending love to you all.

This saddens me as I babysat Jonathan so many, many years ago. A beautiful child grew into a beautiful man. His Father, wife and family are in my prayers.
