Dr. Matthews was the first African American Nurse to work for OSHA in Wisconsin. Laura was a Founding Member of The Milwaukee Chapter of National Black Nurses. Laura always pushed for health equity in Black and Brown communities. Her passion and insight is greatly missed at this pivotal moment in Wisconsin's health care system .

We were heart broken to hear of the loss of Dr. Matthews. She was a friend possessing a good sense of humor and love for the word of God. She gave me my first usher dress over 20years ago and I have it today. When I would write anything referencing the "Word", she would offer to review it for accuracy. She was a very special person. Our heart-felt sympathy is sent to her family.

Mrs. Laura and my granny were BFF before that was such a term -- I loved her spirit and her direct tone. When she spoke -- you were sure to listen. She will be forever in my memory. Her and Ma Clara are back together again!!! ~ Taunya Meeks Griffin
