Lyle Stern Obituary

Stern, Lyle "Pat" Of Wauwatosa, was called peacefully to God on August 21, 2014, at the age of 89 years and one week. Beloved husband for 60 years of Betty (nee Reiff). Dear father of Robert (Chiyoko) of Tokyo, Jim (Maureen) of Wauwatosa and the late Bill. Cherished grandfather of Hugo, Leo, John and Mary Elizabeth. Dear brother-in-law of Edward (Shirley) Drexler and Barbara Mehigan. Preceded in death by his parents Hugo and Adeline of Princeton, Wisconsin, his sister Marion Baker and brother- and sisters-in-law Jerry and Patti Reiff, Fr. Donald Reiff, John Baker and Dr. David Mehigan. Also survived by 14 nieces and nephews and many good friends. Pat served in the Navy during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Cape Johnson, and is a graduate of St. Thomas College and the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking. He started a 40+ year career at First Wisconsin National Bank (now US Bank) in 1948, retiring as Vice President in the Commercial Banking Division. In addition to spectacularly taking care of his family, Pat gave of his time generously to many civic and nonprofit organizations, including Sisters of the Divine Savior Province, St. Catherine's Home for Women, Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Afro-American Council Foundation, Milwaukee Press Club, Milwaukee Council on Alcoholism, St. Mary's Nursing Home, Wisconsin Cardiovascular Foundation, and City of Festivals Parade. He also was a founding board member and treasurer for 13 years of Summerfest (Milwaukee World Festivals, Inc). Pat received several commendations in 1989 for his heroic prevention of the attack on an eight year old girl which led to the perpetrator's arrest and conviction for several like attacks, accomplishing this just weeks after quadruple bypass surgery. Through all he did in life, Pat remained a warm, humble and dedicated husband, father and friend who brought happiness and peace to all he touched. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Marquette University High School or the St. Camillus Foundation. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Monday, August 25 from 4 to 7 PM. A 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Jude the Apostle Church, Wauwatosa (734 N. Glenview Ave.) on Tuesday, August 26. Private family graveside services at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Dear Bob, Jim and Betty: I was saddened to hear of Pat's passing. Your home was like a second home for me growing up in Wauwatosa, and have nothing but the very fondest memories of Pat and Betty (although you'll always be, with the warmest regards, Mr. & Mrs. Stern to me). My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Stern Family, Please accept my deepest sympathy in the loss of Pat. I have many fond memories of Pat and Betty growing up in Ravenswood. Pat and my father, Rolf Dickson, shared a vehicle for many years so my mother and Betty could have a car while they were at work. Sweet memories. Fondly, Sally Dickson Sundby

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Pat - a big loss for the Milwaukee community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Stern family, especially Betty. We were so lucky to have know him for over 30 years. He was always the life of the Irish tailgaters and his wonderful spirit will live on with each Notre Dame game. Pat was God's #1 draft choice!

The Sisters of the Divine Savior have held Pat as a close and dear friend for many years. We are so grateful to him for his gracious service to our mission. We treasure our friendship with him and with his wife Betty. Blessings and Prayers of the Sisters to Pat's family.

Dear Stern Family,

One of the great things about following the Lord Jesus Christ is the fact that He is always with us…every hour and every day.

May this bring you peace as you mourn and seek comfort in God's holiness. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.
