Mark Torinus Obituary

Torinus, Mark E. Age 60, executive coach, non-profit foundation leader and journalist, passed away Wednesday evening. Mr. Torinus, who had suffered a serious heart attack early in 2010, died suddenly at his home in Brookfield, WI. Mark lived with a joy for life, always finding fun in the moment he was living and planning for the next big trip. Mark is survived by his wife Maryclaire (nee Krienke), a son, Nathan (Cynthia), two daughters, Sarah and Anne, and two grandchildren, James and Juliette Torinus. He was a loving and invested father and a cherished husband and companion to his wife, whom he met in the 5th grade. Mark took real pleasure in touching other people's lives, and many remember him with a warm heart. Mark was born in Green Bay, December 9, 1952 as the "caboose" of a family of six children. His parents were John and Louise Torinus, formerly of DePere. He tormented Old Lady McFersson with smoke bombs left at her front door and rotten apples pelted at her back roof. He attended Abbot Pennings High School in DePere, where he was senior class president. He then graduated from Dartmouth College in 1975. While there, Mark wrote for and helped edit the Daily Dartmouth, became president of the fraternity Kappa Kappa Kappa, and graduated cum laude in government. He was an alumni interviewer for Dartmouth College applicants for 35 years. Mark co-owned the Menominee (MI) Herald-Leader with two older brothers from 1975 to 1983, ultimately serving as Editor and General Manager. He also served as President of the Menominee United Way, and co-founded the local chapter of Ducks Unlimited. When the brothers eventually sold to The Janesville Gazette, a mid-sized newspaper, Mark moved to Janesville to become editor. During his tenure, The Gazette started the Sunday edition and the paper put out journalism of which he was proud. Mark was a founding member of the Janesville Sports Hall of Fame and served on the City Zoning Board of Appeals. In 1994, he embarked on a second career in the non-profit sector. Mark took a job as Campaign Director for United Way of Northern Rock County, then as a division Campaign Director for United Way of Milwaukee and in 1996, became President of the Wisconsin Foundation for Independent Colleges, Inc. The marquee program at WFIC helped minority, low income and first-generation students build the dream of attending college, and then realize that dream. Statewide, the program helped more than 500 students per year graduate from high school and matriculate into higher education. Known as College Readiness 21, the program was Mark's crowning professional achievement. WFIC built its endowment from $1 million to $10 million, with the proceeds going to scholarships. While at WFIC, Mark served on the Executive Committee of the Foundation for Independent Higher Education and was the driving force and deciding vote to merge the organization with the Council of Independent Colleges. Mark's third career began in 2010 as an executive coach for future leaders of family companies, by leading an executive forum affiliated with a company called TEC Midwest. Throughout his career he counseled young people on finding their passions, making the right choice for attending college, and making fulfilling career path decisions. He also served as President the Greater Delafield (WI) Community Fund and Chair of the Village of Summit Zoning Board of Appeals. Mark was an avid hunter and an accomplished angler, and was happy being in nature and on the chase. He took great joy in owning and training hunting dogs, owning six of them from his school days on. He loved to tell stories and jokes. He wrote a book, "Prairie Pothole Fever," which sold 700 copies, while 300 were donated to Ducks Unlimited. The book was based on stories generated over 36 consecutive family duck hunting trips to Saskatchewan. His favorite place in the world was the bench at the end of the dock at our family cottage, "The Omelet," on the Green Bay in Egg Harbor, WI. His hobbies included fishing, fly fishing, upland bird and waterfowl hunting, cross country and downhill skiing, bird watching, and reading American history. He played golf with his son and his grandson, but complained that swinging moderately and hitting it straight was never as satisfying as taking a mighty swing on the chance of achieving something epic. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 25, from 4:00-7:00 PM at Krause Funeral Home, 21600 W. Capitol Dr., Brookfield, WI. There will be a vigil service at 6:00 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 26, at 11:00 AM, at St. Anthony's on the Lake Catholic Church, W280 N2101 Prospect Avenue, Pewaukee, WI. There will be a short visitation at 10:00 AM preceding the funeral Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to The Boys and Girls Club of Milwaukee.

Dear Maryclair,
I just this moment read of Mark's passing in the Alumni News. I am so very sorry. I remember him a bit from high school, but knew you much better. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your children and grandchildren. I pray that you find comfort in your memories and I know you will find comfort in your faith. God Bless.

Dear Maryclaire, your children, friends, et al...Mark and I met in Cub Scouts. We had a great den--Mark, John Whitney, Steve Swan, Doug Seeman and Doug Debroux. When Mark later left Boy Scouts it was NEVER as much fun for me. Mark in my mind was the older brother I never had; Mark modelled how to act as a brother, and father! We sipped wine on a ski slope at Powderhorn and hunted partridge with Marnie in between fields. Mark always treated others with great respect, class and dignity; he passed on what he was given by his brothers, parents, wife, children church etc.-- always with a twinkle in his eye. He was a stellar hunter and hated to lose at golf. I hope his favorite place on the dock remains because I intend to visit it in Door County soon. Love, Hans & Dana Ecker

Thanks for all the wonderful newspaper articles about Mark and your family!!! It was good to hear and to be even prouder of a fellow Class member of APHS '71. "Charge Squires onto the field...." and it was nice to hear that he did just that plus. All his gifts will be missed but always appreciated by many. My sincerest thoughts to the family in this time of transition.

Maryclaire, I've been thinking about Mark and you since I heard this sad, sad news.

Mark was a great guy and one of the most genuinely sincere people I've ever met. He was both a mature voice of reason, and a smiling instigator of mischief.... He plays a big role in many of my most cherished memories and I'm inspired by the legacy of love and accomplishment that he leaves behind. Please know that you and the family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mark was a dear colleague and friend when we both served as state executives in the FIHE network. He was smart, witty, kind-hearted, visionary, and someone whom I admired a great deal. Mark was a gifted story teller. I fondly recall tears of laughter rolling down my face at dinner during one of his many stories.

Although those tears of laughter have turned to sadness, I am so grateful that I was a small part of Mark's life journey. He was a blessing in my life and in the lives of many.

Dear Maryclaire:

A friend in Milwaukee sent me an email this morning with the news of Mark's death. My friend remembered me talking about a "Torius fellow I liked and admired."

And now I'm so sad. Mark was a very special and talented guy, and a fine person. Most of all, I remember that he had a heart for needy students. I regret losing touch with him when I moved back to Iowa from DC, but I didn't forget him. Never will.

I will say a prayer for you and your family.

August 26, 2013

We'll say a prayer for Mark and his entire family. At 16 years old, Mark and I caught steelheads in Heinz Creek, smallmouth bass at Chambers Island, shot Door County grouse, and pheasants, with his dog Marnie. Everyone knows Mark was kind, happy, and fun to be around. We'll toast "Tor" and he knows it.

Dear Maryclaire, John, Tom, and all other Torinus family members,

How sweet those memories of doing journalism in the UP! They linger as I ponder a world without Mark.

I remember the great promise he showed as he learned the biz under Tom and John. I can still feel the warmth of your wedding, Maryclaire. I can hear the roar of the motor boat that helped us cross to Door County, where the sails flapped and the bay beckoned Mark. I can smell the fresh snow in the UP woods where Mark, Pat Egan and Maryclaire taught me to cross country ski before children came along.

We lost touch but I never stopped thinking of you, and we reconnected a few years ago. There was the same Mark with his loud laugh on the other end of the phone. All of our young lives proved to have great highs and lows as we made our way. Mark marched through them with dignity and smarts. I will never forget him. I hope for all Torini that the many wonderful memories ease the grief of losing a brother, husband, father and friend too soon.

I heard the sad news at the Ozaukee Washington Land Reserve dinner last night. How fitting, I thought, that Mark's love of the outdoors --- instilled in me in my 20s --- would comfort me as I looked out on the restored land, the clean beach and the blue waves of Lake Michigan.

I hope he is enjoying The Great Smelt Fry in the sky as our tears release our profound sadness brought on by the passing of his great spirit.

All my love,
Ellen Foley, former managing editor, Menominee Herald Leader

Hello Mary Claire,

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mark's passing.

Mark was one of the first friends I made when my family moved to De Pere. I have such great memories of he and his brothers including me in ski trips to Crivitz and Hidden Valley in Maribel. It's where my love of snow skiing developed.

Clearly, he influenced so many in such a positive way. He really did leave us all too soon.

My best wishes to you and the kids.
