Nancy Thauer Obituary

Nancy McHenry Thauer

Nancy Thauer, age 91, was greeted warmly into Heaven by her Savior on March 25, 2020, by so many arriving before: Bible study and church friends, bridge players, and most of all, her husband George, who's been holding her spot for 17 years. Born in Buffalo, NY, in 1928, and raised in Chicago, she met the love of her life on a train for Cleveland, where she taught as a recent graduate of National Louis Teachers College. They married almost immediately, settling in Whitefish Bay, WI, to start their family: Todd (Heather), Julie (John Andritsch), Carolyn and William. She also taught in Whitefish Bay Schools until 1962, and later served on its school board. A "compulsive explainer" she used her gifts for the teaching of God's Word for adults and children for over 50 years in the community and at Hill Point Church (Mayflower Congregational earlier), only retiring from it in 2019. Teaching lead to the opportunity to serve on the executive committee for the Billy Graham Crusade in Milwaukee (1979), to giving book reviews for the Women's Club, and even to leading a cooking badge for the Girl Scouts, not to mention countless educational field trips disguised as vacations. She will forever be loved by her grandchildren: Andrew, Deborah, Hannah, Miriam, Zechariah Thauer and Michael and Jack Andritsch, and great granddaughter Aubrey and will be missed by so many friends for her baking, plum puddings, and her dedication to sharing her heart for Jesus. Arrangements for a celebration of life pending CDC recommendations. Memorials to Wycliffe Bible Translators appreciated.

My mother introduced me to Nancy 10 or 15 years ago. Maybe longer. She attended bible study at my mother's home. When it was time for Nancy to move out of the home she and George shared for many years, I helped pack up many of her belongings and cleaned afterward. Nancy and I got along right away. She always had fresh baked cookies waiting for me when she knew I was going to be there, kind of like my grandma. Not plain old cookies made out of dough sold in a package, but pieces of art. I like to write. Nancy commented several times that I was a good writer. That is one of the nicest compliments I've ever received, especially coming from a teacher. I'd send her cards I made and write messages on Facebook. A few years ago, she had a stroke. I asked my mother how she was and when I could go see her. I was at her bedside as soon as possible and she remembered me immediately. Nancy loved chocolate ice creme. Once in a while, mom and I would stop at Copp's and bring chocolate custard. Usually, I'd stop at the grocery store and get a quart of chocolate ice creme. If I didn't have it, she would have still been happy to see me, but I always did. I'm a photographer and always have a camera with me. Her daughter, Julie was often there when I arrived. Once, I asked her to take some photographs of Nancy and I. On a string beside her bed were a number of photographs. The photograph of us was first. I miss you Nancy.

Dear Mrs. Thauer, Thank you for being a role model for Julie & my generation of women! I always loved how you spoke from your heart, treated kids like real people & asked us thought provoking questions. Your house on Marlborough Drive seemed like the center of Whitefish Bay as you made us feel so welcome. Your stellar examples of Caring for your family & contributing to the community Have Stood the test of time. And thank you for all of the sheet cakes shared by Jill, Kay, Cathy, Lynn, Pam, Jackie, Arlene...hope I got all!
