Paul Fox Obituary

Fox, Paul Stephen, MD Born to eternal rest June 29, 2012 at the age of 70. Beloved husband of 47 years to Susan (neé Pettinger). Father of Sarah (John Colburn), Paul (Mary Celine), Margaret Armstrong (Jamie), Christopher (Charlene), Peter (Melodie), and Anne Wick (Billy). Dearest grandfather "Pop" of Nora Wynn, Julia, Grace, Donovan and Colette Armstrong, Luke and Rory Fox, Eva and Finn Fox, Owen and Eloise Wick, and Louie and Simon Fox. Paul is survived by siblings Elizabeth, Alice, James, Sheila, and Lawrence, along with brothers-in-life Dennis and John McNally and Johnny Meyer. He is preceded in death by mother, Mardie (neé Stevens) and father, Paul Fabian, and an infant son, Michael. He additionally leaves behind countless adoring friends, admiring colleagues, and appreciative patients. Paul was born on May 12, 1942 in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from Fenwick High School in 1960 and the University of Notre Dame in 1964. Thereafter, he attended Marquette University Medical School (now the Medical College of Wisconsin) earning Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors. He completed his internship in surgery at the University of Chicago and returned to the Medical College of Wisconsin to finish his surgical training. He remained on the staff at the Medical College in the department of Transplant Surgery and participated in many of the earliest kidney transplants performed in the state of Wisconsin. In 1974, a two-year military commitment took him and his family to Washington D.C., where he served as a Major at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. There, he developed a keen interest in Vascular Surgery, and afterwards eagerly joined William B. Davies, MD, in the practice of General and Vascular Surgery in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where he remained in private practice for over 30 years. He served as Chief of Staff at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, and was on the Board of Governors for the American College of Surgeons, President of the Wisconsin Surgical Society and President of the Alumni Association of the Medical College of Wisconsin, among other professional and leadership roles. Paul's legacy includes an unyielding commitment to surgical quality and medical education. He was instrumental in bringing the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (NSQIP) to Waukesha Memorial Hospital - the first hospital in the State to adopt this national benchmark program. Additionally, he dedicated himself to surgical education, developing the program to bring third year medical students and surgical residents to Waukesha Memorial to enhance their training. He has twice been awarded by the Milwaukee Academy of Medicine as "teacher of the year" - an award bestowed on him by the graduating medical students. Furthermore, he was given the prestigious Marvin Wagner Clinical Preceptor award from the Medical College in recognition of excellence in medical education. Paul was also an accomplished and passionate fisherman, who threw flies he tied from rods he made into waters from Canada to Alaska, Costa Rica and the Caribbean. His many loved partners on those waters will carry his memory on all future adventures. He was a master craftsman and woodworker, who leaves behind a cadre of swing sets, dollhouses, furniture, bamboo fly rods, and boats, including a cedar kayak that he captained proudly. He was a lover of sports, especially baseball, as well as animals, particularly his beloved Bouviers and horses, most memorably his faithful stallion P.F., whose back welcomed only Paul. He was also the Team Physician for the Catholic Memorial Football team for two decades, standing the sidelines with his loyal brother and ally Bill Young. Paul very recently enjoyed the honor of being inducted into the CMH Athletic Hall of Fame. He was devoted to his family, playing sidekick to his soul mate, Mom, at the home they created to welcome guests and family at all times, especially the many legendary and enormous parties and Thanksgivings. He was a man of service to his faith, offering his medical expertise for many years to the uninsured patients of the St. Joe's Clinic, bringing his surgical skills on a medical mission to St. Lucia, and serving for many years on the St. Mary's Parish Council. All will dearly miss him. Visitation will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church 225 S. Hartwell Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186, Monday July 2, 2012 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again Tuesday July 3, 2012 from 9:30 AM until the Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the St. Joe's Clinic in his memory: 826 North East Avenue, Waukesha, WI 53186.

Dear Sue and all of the FOX family, Our hearts go out to you at this time for the emptiness you must all feel at the loss of a most memorable husband, father, grandfather and physician. We will never forget the kindness he showed to one of his oldest friends, Tom Hayden, in not abandoning him and in flying down to see him in his last days in Phoenix. WE will never forget the eulogy Paul gave at Tom's Memorial in 2011. May they both continue their friendship in heaven!!
With love,

Our hearts are heavy and our thoughts and prayers are with the Fox family. Paul was a wonderful friend and we have awesome memories of him with us at Route Lake.
God grant that I may live
To fish until my dying day.
And when it comes to my last cast,
I then most humbly pray
When in the Lord's safe landing net
I am peacefully asleep.
That in his mercy, I be judged
As good enough to keep. Amen

Knowing Dr. Chris Fox, I see where he get's his father's well rounded smile. We have lost our loving father's as well and it is so difficult to even speak words to compensate such a loss. To all the Fox families and the family and wife of Dr. Chris Fox know we are heartfelt for the loss of your mentor, father, and friend.

After our training together at Medical College of Wisconsin, we stayed in contact by phone or at meetings for 39 years. We reminisced about our residency years and once stayed up almost all night in Chicago laughing at old stories. Susan and my memories of our families together at Green Lake are the happiest times of our life and Paul and I spoke about them often. He was a great surgeon and even greater man. He looked for and found the best in everybody he met. I will miss him terribly.
Sue and the family will remain in our prayers.
