I just recently found out about Paul's passing. Although I am retired now, I worked with Paul at the Department of City Development for a number of years and I truly enjoyed his stories about the historic buildings and houses. Paul was very proud of his book and his research. He was so proud of getting the City Hall bells to ring again. I always enjoyed chatting with him after work while we walked to our parking spots. He was a kind, giving and wonderful person. He will be truly missed. I am so sorry for your loss. Hang onto all the good memories.
Rest in peace, Paul.

I've known Paul for almost as long as I've lived in Milwaukee. When he first came to work for the city, we shared a work space where he worked on his books, and I came to appreciate his talent and unique skill set in historic preservation. He could articulate the approach, draw it, and he knew how to build it too! Over the years, he was a remarkable friend with a great sense of humor and irony. Truly one of a kind. The world is smaller without him.

Nine years ago my husband and I purchased our Victorian in North Point South, often jokingly referred to as "Tiffany's Folly". Needing a break from our sanders, hammers and angry contractors - sound familiar? - I found myself in Paul's office. Ten minutes later armed with Paul's book, "As Good As New", my husband and I began a journey that was finally completed two years ago. After all the blood, sweat and tears (many tears) our home was honored with the Cream of the Cream City Award. Learning that it was Paul who nominated our home was as great an honor as receiving it. I will always remember that day in Paul's office; "Maybe you'll get the bug?" he joked. "Nah," I joked back, "we have a couple of planned projects and then we're done. No way am I getting sucked in." "You never know," he smiled. Looking back, I have a feeling he did know. Thank you Paul for your guidance and encouragement, not only to us but to the many others who because of you got the bug.
You'll be missed,
Tiffany and Brad Tinsey

I am so sorry for your loss. I never met Paul, but knew and developed a great appreciation for him and his work, through his preservation books. I learned a great deal from them, and used them to teach many more people about preservation practices and old buildings. His books are the best I have found and have been tremendously helpful to many people inside and outside Milwaukee. His love for history, preservation, buildings, great workmanship, and his willingness and generosity in wanting to help others shines through in his work and will live on in those books and his great example.

As a member of HPC I came to appreciate Paul's compassion, intellect, & tireless dedication to Preservation. We and generations to come will benefit by his many contributions to our City. He stood for his values in a quiet gentle manner, always the gentleman. After leaving the Commission we continued our friendship. I will miss our telephone chats but mostly our monthly coffee dates. I am out of the State and regret that I cannot attend Paul's services. He will be missed but not be forgotten. Sandra McSweeney

Paul contributed more to the City of Milwaukee as a brilliant advocate for the preservation of its history than anyone I know. He did his work with grace, conviction and diligence from his extensive knowledge base. He did not expect accolades. The result of his work was his reward. He volunteered his expertise willingly to accomplish important outcomes. He was not afraid to stand up for the right decision even in the face of powerful dissension. He worked tirelessly, putting in many more hours than he was obligated to do, when a project warranted. The vast bank of information in his brain will not soon be replaced. I am proud to call him my friend and will miss him tremendously.

I've known Paul for a very long time. I admired Paul for his extensive intellect, the books he wrote, his prominence as an authority on housing preservation - and - he was quite an easy guy to have a chat with! I honestly don't know how he coped his medical issues. What a role model he was! Thank you, Paul, for your friendship, your perseverance, strength of spirit and endurance. Rest in peace.

Paul will certainly be remembered by many in the City of Milwaukee; some who he guided, some whom he cajoled, some who he compelled to preserve the heritage of Milwaukee's architectural past. His passion for the history of the City will endure as will those qualities he expressed in striving to maintain our sense of place and to preserve that which is worth saving. That zeal will not be lost, but lives on in his attitude, and in all of the buildings he and the Historic Preservation Commission fought to protect for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

Dear Paul, a man of unwavering convictions, now at peace in the hands of God. I smile as I imagine, while passing through, he has already suggested to St. Peter some renovation to Heaven's Gate.
