Richard Arnold Obituary

Arnold, Richard "Dick" Died July 25, 2009, at the age of 78 of Leukemia. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Audrey (Key), sons Devon (Joanne) and Thane, and grandchildren, Trevor and Alyssa. From his rural farm beginnings with one room school houses, Dick was a l949 graduate and salutatorian of Whitewater City High School, a l953 Bachelor of Education graduate of Whitewater College, and a 1959 Master's graduate of the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis. Dick came to Waukesha in 1953 and taught Business Education for 21 years. He served as president of the Wisconsin Business Education Association in 1961-62. Dick became vice-principal of Waukesha South High School in 1974, and then served as principal from 1975 until retiring in 1988. Dick loved sports, especially basketball. He played in multiple leagues and on as many as three teams in a season earning ten city and league titles and three personal scoring titles. A request to coach the high school tennis team touched off a lifetime of learning and love of another sport, tennis. He coached tennis for 19 years at Waukesha South and was inducted into the Wisconsin High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1981. Dick was passionately involved in tennis on and off the court for more than 55 years. As a competitor in many tournaments and leagues, Dick was state ranked for a dozen years and accumulated many awards at the city, county, state, and midwest level. From 1963 until his death, Dick also served tirelessly on the administrative side of tennis as chairman of numerous committees and president of the Waukesha Tennis Association, the Wisconsin Tennis Association, and the Midwest Tennis Association. He also went on to serve as an at-large member of the United States Tennis Association Board of Directors. Dick was honored with multiple prestigious awards for his contributions and years of service to tennis including induction into the Midwest Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 2005. Dick also officiated for tennis, volleyball and basketball for more than 20 years, served as Wisconsin Chairman of Officials, taught certification classes, and in 2005, received the Midwest Frank Dowling Award for tennis officiating excellence and contributions. Dick loved Waukesha. He served as a Meals-on-Wheels substitute driver for 19 years, a member of The Caring Place Board, a charter member, president and International Hixon award recipient with the Waukesha Golden K Kiwanis, a charter board member of the Waukesha Tennis Association, and a board member and president of the Waukesha Civic Theatre. In the early 1960's Dick started the Waukesha Park and Recreation tennis program. In the summer of 1974, he created a tennis excellence program that continues to this day serving aspiring young athletes. He helped the Park and Recreation Department and the Waukesha Tennis Association coordinate activities and events at the Woyahn Center for well over 20 years. He was honored in 1997 for his contributions to Waukesha tennis with the dedication in his name of a four-court expansion at the complex. Dick was very proud of the programs, people and funding that provided stimulus for the future of tennis in Waukesha. Dick cherished his loving and supportive wife, his two beloved sons, his caring and compassionate daughter-in-law, the pleasure of watching two grandchildren mature, his 35 years in the Waukesha School System, and his years of athletics and coaching. "Betterment" was Dick Arnold's focus in all his endeavors. A visitation will be held Saturday, August 1, from 12 to 3 PM, at Waukesha South High School auditorium, 401 E. Roberta Avenue, Waukesha (enter on west side of building), with a memorial service to follow. I owe my final teaching years to Dick Arnold. I experienced layoffs due to declining enrollment in the Elmbrook District. After a year at Marquette Law School, I once again tried to find a teaching job. Dick hired me to teach U.S. History and Economics, at South, and I am forever grateful to that wonderful man.

I had met Dick at Audrey and my class reunions. But it was when we appeared together in the play "Barefoot in the Park" with the Waukesha Civic Theater, that we really became acquainted. I played his mother-in-law; he played the "Robert Redford" character, and we had great fun!

I will always remember that little "cackle" in his voice--the little crack when he laughed. He ran a "tight ship" as principal! There were no incidents at South at graduation because Dick demanded that this be a dignified ceremony for students, families, and friends.

I cherish the 13 years I spent at South, remembering some wonderful young students, fine colleagues, and the leadership of Dick Arnold, who allowed me to regain my loved profession.

Dear beautiful Audrey (whose lovely soprano voice few have heard), please accept my sincere, heartfelt condolences to you and your family. You married a wonderful man.

My grandfather hired Mr. Arnold and he in turn hired me. Over the years he always asked me to call him 'Dick' and I never could, I had and still have too much respect for him, what he did and what he meant to so many. Someone in heaven just got a great doubles partner.

To the family of Dick Arnold,

My sincerest sympathy. I had so much respect for Mr. Arnold. He was a legend in Business Education, long after he moved on to use his organizational skills as principal.

He hired me from Whitewater in 1976, and then my talent as an Accounting teacher was tested by having Devon take my class!

I am so sad to hear of your loss. I am a friend of Bob Schuett....long time friend of Dick's. I was also a student at Waukesha South High School while Dick was the Principal. He was a classy and wonderful man!
