Richard Burke Obituary

Burke, Richard A. Founder and Chairman of Trek Bicycle Corporation and Chairman of Roth Corporation died peacefully March 10, 2008, at the age of 73, from complications following heart surgery. He will be best remembered as a visionary entrepreneur and an innovative philanthropist in the Milwaukee community through his Trinity Foundation. Born June 4, 1934, in the Chicago area, Dick attended Marquette University ('56) and was a Sloane Fellow at MIT ('80). He recently received honorary doctorate degrees recognizing his business achievements and community contributions from Marquette and Mount Mary College. Dick's commitment to a better future focused on urban education, youth, and leadership development. He was instrumental in making the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center and the Urban Ecology Center realities, and initiating and supporting programs at Nativity Jesuit Middle School, Marquette, Mount Mary, Alverno College, the YMCA and many other community organizations. He leaves behind a great spirit and a legacy that exemplifies "from those to whom much is given, much is required." Dick's approach to life is a model to his family: his wife Camille, his children Kathleen Seiberlich, Mary, John, Sharon Jonas, and Michele Deubel, their mother Elaine, Dick's brother Michael Trizil, as well as eleven grandchildren. He will also be remembered by his many friends and business associates worldwide. In his own words: "Thanks, what a great ride it's been." In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center outreach program, the Milwaukee YMCA Sponsor-A-Scholar program or the Urban Ecology Center. A celebration of his life will be held at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, 325 W. Walnut St., Monday, March 17, at 5 PM. Visitation with the family will precede from 2 - 5 PM.

Best wishes to the family. Mr. Burke's generous donations changed my life tremendously. He was such a great man to talk to. He had a big smile and a big heart. I just recently lost my little brother so I know just how you are feeling. My prayers are with you. God Bless.

We were saddend to hear of Dick's death. We always remember fondly our old Bridge group and how when we got together, no one wanted to go home, because we had so many kids there. I'm sure he and "harmless" are having some good times.

To our best friend Kathy and entire Burke family. Our deepest sympathy go out to your entire family. Kathy's father dedicated himself to so many others it is impossible to measure. We spent 20 years with the BDBT 150 and shared many fond moments with Kathy. Her fathers bikes are still and always be with us. God Bless you all.
