Richard Ramseyer Obituary

Ramseyer, Richard W. Answered his last alarm Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015. Age 91. Beloved husband of the late Marjorie (nee Osterer). Dear father of Barbara (the late Richard) Scarvaci of Grafton, Carolyn (Frank) Tesoriere of Las Vegas, NV, Richard M. (Alice) of Rhinelander, Marjorie (Peter) Werkowski of St. Johns, FL, Jeanne Arezina, Phyllis (the late Al) Klein of Raleigh NC, James W (Mitzi), and Susan Zeimet (David McCoy). 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Pat (the late George) Kachelmeyer. Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Dick was a lifelong resident of Wisconsin while wintering in New Port Richey FL for a number of years. He graduated from Rufus King High School where he was an all-city guard on the football team and went on to Marquette on a football scholarship. When WWII came, he entered the Army and trained as a navigator in what was then the Army Air Corps. He returned to Milwaukee in 1945 and met a brand-new graduate of Rufus King, Marge Osterer. They married in January of 1947 and were together for 59 years until her passing in 2006. He joined the Milwaukee Fire Department in 1948 and moved up through the ranks becoming what was at those times the youngest lieutenant, captain, and battalion chief in the history of the department. He achieved a final rank of deputy chief (in the shop) before retiring in 1985. He was a frustrated artist and had many interests and hobbies throughout his life. Photography, jewelry-making, furniture building, sculpture and wood carving. There is a bas-relief carving in the lobby of the Fire Dept. School that was designed and created by a crew of artistic firefighters that he was thrilled to have been a part of. Another passion was travel and he traveled with Marge or friends to Mexico, China, Ecuador, Rwanda and Thailand taking the opportunity to embrace his joy of photography. After his retirement, he and Marge bought a motor home and traveled all over the lower 48, Canada and up to Alaska. He had an unabashed interest in the people and cultures he visited and has friends all over the world. A lifetime learner, he truly took every opportunity to create an adventurous and full life. He will be greatly missed. A memorial gathering will be held on January 11th at Mo's Irish Pub 10842 W. Bluemound Rd.; with a Memorial celebration at 11 AM followed by a family Visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Wisconsin Public Television or the American Lung Association; or the charity of your choice.

The entire Berg family and Custom-Pak family sends heartfelt condolences to all the Ramseyers on the passing of Dick -- he is at peace with the Lord reunited with his beloved Marge, as well as my late grandparents Dick & Betty who were lifelong great friends. I fondly remember Dick & Marge dropping in at Custom-Pak to say hello (as well as Marge being one of our first employees along with other card club ladies!), and leaving their camper parked in back of our building. I still have an amethyst rock they gave me from one of their adventures that I will treasure always. If any of the family is ever in the Germantown area, please stop in at Custom-Pak and say hello! God Bless you all,
-Dan Berg, grandson of Dick & Betty Berg

My sister (Xiaofang) and I (Xiaohong) are two mentioned international friends who got to know Marge and Dick during one of their trips they took to China in the earlier 1980s. Eventually, we became lifelong friends. In additional to 8 kids they had, they added two more international students from China on the list. At least this is how we feel: we found a home away from home and a beloved and respected couple as our mentors, advisors, rescuers, and newly adopted parents in the USA.

I told my husband, Min, later that every minute I spent with Marge and Dick and their large family had been filled with fond memories of easiness, love, fun and joy, and no recollection of any cultural conflict and frustrations despite the generational and cultural differences we came from. I recall that the first wedding gown I put on (even before I was thinking ever get married) was picked up from JCPenny's outlet store at Milwaukee during one of the shopping trips Marge took me. What a joy! The first time I entered their old home in the city and found a bar in the basement, I thought that they owned a restaurant! The crying and consultation I had with "Dr. Marge" emotionally as I broke up with my first boy friend, Marge told me that "Felling love again!" The old American saying I picked up from them "son of a gun". The walks I had with Dick under the Florida moon and the talks we had about China and United States.... Marge is such a nice and big hearted woman and Dick is such a smart, sharp, and respected person, they will live alive in my heart forever, ever.....

With them both being gone, what a sense of loss and emptiness left in my heart.

As I said in my dedication of my Ph.D. thesis on U.S. and China relations:

"It is dedicated to Marge and Dick Ramseyer who taught me the goodness of this country and its people."

It is, and it went deeper and far beyond that.

To Barbara, Ricky, Carolyn, Marjorie, Jeanne, Phyllis, Jimmy and Susie, I can feel the same pain and loss you have right now, and I will remember them dearly and fondly in my heart and mind forever.

My sympathy to all of Dick's children and families. Dick was like a second father to my late Jeffrey. He shared many stories with me and our family working with Dick for many years. Especially when Jeff was Dick's aide. We will always be thankful for the knowledge and help he gave to us. Dick and Marge were wonderful people. They will be in my prayers.
