Robert Jasna Obituary

Robert C. Jasna

Franklin - After a life of service to the children of Milwaukee Public Schools, Robert C. Jasna peacefully passed away after a valiant battle with leukemia on Friday, March 19th at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judith, his daughters Kirsten (Peirce Clayton) of Los Angeles, CA and Erica (Craig Struble) of San Jose, CA; grandchildren Elias (23, Los Angeles), Sylvie (20, Los Angeles), Parker (15, San Jose), and Larkin (13, San Jose); sister JoAnn (Tozar Marusic, Milwaukee); sisters-in-law Kay (Bob) and Mary; and nieces and nephews throughout Wisconsin and beyond.

A life-long resident of Milwaukee, Bob started his career with Milwaukee Public Schools as a kindergarten student at Walter Allen School in 1943. A 1956 South Division High School graduate - a basketball champion and letterman - Bob attended UWM, earning a B.S. in Education, playing inter-collegiate basketball, having fun with his Kappa brothers, and meeting the love of his life, Judy.

After marrying in Milwaukee in 1960, Bob and Judy moved to Appleton, WI to start their teaching careers. After receiving orders a year later, Bob - a member of the Army ROTC while at UWM - and Judy moved to Ft. Benning, Georgia and then Ft. Hood, Texas where he began as an infantry platoon leader. Bob was honorably discharged from the Army at the rank of 1st Lieutenant in 1963 and received an Army Commendation medal. Bob was active as a Captain with the 128th Infantry of the Wisconsin National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1969.

After his military discharge, Bob held many positions in Milwaukee Public Schools - starting as a ninth grade science teacher at Juneau Junior/Senior High School and Morse Junior High School, basketball and tennis coach, vice-principal, principal, and finally moving to MPS Central Office in 1989 as associate superintendent and becoming deputy superintendent in 1991. Bob retired as the 27th Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools in 1997 and began teaching at UW-Milwaukee. He enjoyed being back at the university level, preparing teachers and students to be effective administrators.

A member of many community boards and organizations, Bob received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UW-Milwaukee in 1990. His tenure as the first principal of North Division High School (1976-1980) was especially noted with the award. North was the first Milwaukee-area high school to be desegregated and he worked with both the district and community members to build an environment of inclusion. He was especially proud of his work at North Division. He also served as principal of West Division High School (1973-1976), James Madison High School (1980-1987), and Riverside University High School (1987-1989).

In retirement, Bob spent winters in Florida and summers Up North with Judy. Bob enjoyed working on the cottage, puttering around Star Lake in the pontoon boat, and spending time with good friends. In Florida, he was on the Leftovers champion Bocce Ball team at Country Creek and enjoyed attending art shows and going to musical events at the Barbara Mann in Ft. Myers and Artis in Naples. He and Judy also travelled throughout the United States, often visiting their daughters and grandchildren, who called him Bah. A golfer, Bob enjoyed time on the links in Florida and Milwaukee - though he never got a hole-in-one. For many years Bob had season tickets for the Packers when they played at County Stadium and enjoyed going to see the Brewers play, often taking the Freeway Flyer to the old County Stadium with his daughter and father-in-law. He also enjoyed woodworking, was an accomplished weaver, and read voraciously (crime mysteries were his favorite). He was also hard to keep up with when it came to technology, often having the latest phone, computer, or gadget before the rest of us. And he loved to shop - never passing up a bargain.

Great care was received from Aurora St. Luke's and he enjoyed talking with his many former MPS students over the years that stopped by during his last stay in the hospital. His family enjoyed hearing stories and meeting all those whose lives were touched by his generous spirit.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held this summer to ensure safe gathering; a notice will be posted in the Journal-Sentinel. Giving back to the community was paramount to Bob. In lieu of flowers, please make a gift to: Hunger Task Force, Robert C. Jasna Scholarship for MPS graduates at UW-Milwaukee, your favorite veteran's charity, or Aurora Healthcare Foundation.

I was on the MPS board when Bob was super indent. He was always kind and professional to me as a new member. My sincerest condolences to all his family. I especially I remember a baptismal celebration at a Old Town restaurant. What a pleasure to be there! Warren Braun

If Mr. Jasna taught 6th grade in Appleton in the fall of 1960, I may have been one of his students. My experience in his class was amazing! I was a military dependant in town for a short while and he made me feel very welcome and special. It sounds like he had a very distinguished career. I would love to hear from one of his children. My email address is [email protected].

Mr. Jasna: You were a true educator and believer of humanity. Under your leadership at North Division (MPS) you created an environment that "color" was never an issue/concern.I greatly appreciate knowing you as a people person. With the Grace of God "Rest in Peace" A true Warrior

I was so sorry to hear of Bob´s passing. I was honored to serve as his assistant when he was Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools. He was a strong leader and advocate for Milwaukee´s children, families and staff during often difficult and challenging times. It was a privilege to have personally known him and was grateful for the opportunity to work with him. My sincere sympathy is extended to his family. It is such a great loss.

My sympathy goes out to Bob's entire family. I have wonderful memories , starting with his teaching, a few doors down from me at Juneau. Then his daughter was one of my star students at Fritsche. MPS was very fortunate that he spent his career there. He was always a "Kids First" person, and a positive influence on staff and coworkers. So many have benefited from knowing him.
Again, my sympathies.

I was a cashier at majdecki's food store 1979 - 1983ish, and Bob was a favorite face to see...while he was stopping by to pick up milk on the way home. He was so friendly and kind. The world will miss him

Indeed I'm saddened to learn of Bob's passing and extend my deepest sympathy to Judy and the rest of the family. I met Bob many years ago as he and my sister Marilyn (SDHS class of '54) were friends from the neighborhood as well as school. I was 9 years old when she would take me to South's basketball games. And yes, Bob was a champion! I was so impressed with what I saw, my first choice for high school was SDHS. Little did I know that initial experience would develop into a life long relationship. As with Bob, my career was with MPS and without question, he played a major role in it. Although we teased each other about our Serbian heritage and how often we were in church, its remarkable how similar our professional careers were. Each of us were teachers, coaches, assistant principals and principals. In fact, I counseled with Bob numerous times about the principalship and its demands as well as expectations. His support and guidance were foundational, and to this day, I am grateful for his help. I will always remember Bob's forthrightness, candor and integrity with issues concerning MPS as he met challenges, accepted responsibilities along with demonstrating exceptional leadership. Perhaps most satisfying to me were his invitations to join him at UWM for his administrative leadership classes where together we would interact with his students. A good man who served his family, community and country with distinction and honor. Rest in peace my friend.

Respectfully,

Jim Novak

This is very sad news. I'm reminded of so many wonderful shared times with Judy and Bob and the girls. Living on South Austin Street and having Bob's help with my only successful flower bed. To Judy, and the entire Jasna family, please accept my deepest sympathy. I'm so sorry we fell out of touch and that we didn't have a chance to spend more time together. He really was a a man of so many talents and a generous heart.

I will look forward to any memorial in his honor. As well as the opportunity to reconnect with the lovely Jasna family.
Love,
Lee

So sorry to hear about Bob's death. I first new him as a parent when I had his daughter Ericka as a student at Fritsche Jr. High. She was a fabulous gymnast and helped my team win the city meet 2 years in a row. He was a great supporter of his daughter. Then we met again at RUHS where it was a pleasure to work with him. It was a privilege to have him as our Principal. He was such a good man. Keep your memories close as you go through this tremendous loss. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Both my husband and I worked with Bob. He was great leader, who was well respected and well liked by both staff and students.
Remember the good times as it brings smiles instead of tears. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

My husband & I both knew Bob from when we were in school at Riverside High School. He was a great man who loved to really get to know his students & let them know that he cared. Even after high school he would ask my father how my husband & I were doing. He will truly be missed.

Spending weekends up north with Bob and Judy are some of our favorite memories. The guys puttering around the yard then soaking in the hot tub discussing politics, books, and DIY projects while Judy and I sat on the porch swing chatting. We enjoyed many pontoon rides around Star Lake, drinking Manhattans, eating snacks, and watching the loons. Having a delicious fish fry (Walleye for Bob and Judy) at Maiden Lake and back to the house to watch the Brewers ended a busy day. Bob would get up bright and early to drive to Lakewood for a newspaper and his favorite Amish doughnuts. We miss those days, but we'll really miss Bob more. We raise our glass to you, now Rest in Peace.
