Robert Julian Vig

Robert Vig Obituary

Vig, Robert Julian Age 68, of St. James Plantation, NC, lost his battle with brain cancer and passed peacefully from this life on earth to be with his Lord and Savior on August 6, 2008. Bob is survived by his best friend and wife of 46 years, Emly Ann Vig; sister Phlayne Olson (Gerald), brother Michael Vig (Linda), and brother Joseph Vig (Patti). Beloved father to David Vig (Encarni), Dr. Daniel Vig (Amy), and Kathy Fohr. Adored grandfather to Michael, Joseph, Nikole, Zachary and Ellie. Bob is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was born January 2, 1940, in Morris, MN, to the late Julian and Martha Vig and raised in Veblen, SD. He attended South Dakota State University, where he met his wife, Emly and graduated in 1963 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He and Emly moved to Wisconsin to begin a 32-year career with Vilter Mfg. They raised their family in Big Bend, WI, in a small town atmosphere. Bob was active in the Lions Club and at church. He also enjoyed shooting pool, hunting, camping, canoeing, and playing golf. In 1994 they moved to Cary, NC for a new job opportunity with Morris & Assoc. They adapted quickly to their new southern home and made many new friends while keeping their old friendships as well. Bob worked in industrial refrigeration for 45 years and was well respected worldwide for his expertise and honesty. The couple moved to St. James in 2006 to live out their retirement years where together they enjoyed golfing, fishing, and boating. The family of Robert greatly appreciates the attention and compassionate care given to him by the staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Coastal Companions. They are forever grateful for the outstanding medical care he received from Duke University Medical Center/Tisch Brain Tumor Center, Rex Hospital, Dosher Hospital, Hanover Medical Specialists, and South Atlantic Radiation Oncology. The excellent care of his doctors will never be forgotten: Robert Lacin, Kenneth Zeitler, David Reardon, Terry Pieper, William McNulty, and Martin Meyerson. The generosity and compassion displayed by their family, church members, friends and neighbors will always be remembered and deeply cherished. The family will receive friends form 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, August 22, at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home, 1411 North Howe Street, Southport, NC. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 23, at 10:00 AM, at Saint Peter Lutheran Church, 4843 Hwy. 211, Southport, NC with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Family LifeCare Center, 725A Wellington Ave., Wilmington, NC 28401. Bob will always hold a special place in my heart. When I started work at Morris, Bob went out of his way to make me feel welcome, ask me about my family, and treat me with great respect in a company full of people twice or more than twice my age. He was such a gentle spirit.

Having recently lost my mother to cancer, I know the sadness of loss coupled with gratefulness to have him with his heavenly father and no longer suffering.

I would like to remind you in your time or mourning and great loss, when others will tell you to keep your head up, that, while that is important, even Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus.

God Bless you all for the dedication you showed to his great man of God .

To the Vig family; Emly, David, Dan and Kathy. I was very saddened to hear/see his death notice in the paper. I remember Bob so very well from all the years growing up next door to you all. He didn't change one bit, alittle bit whiter/grayer; but still the same Mr. Vig. I know your pain and loss all too well. Mom passed away last June from liver/pancreas cancer. I know it's hard to hear; but they are in a better place now without the pain and suffering. Just remember all the good times you had with Dad/Bob. Keep the faith and someday you will be reunited with him when its time to do so. Hope you all are doing well and having a great future with your children and careers/life. Take care of yourselves; and God Bless. Linda Differt (Rausch); and the rest of the Kenneth Rausch Family.

Dear Emmi, 8/13/08
I was shocked to see Bob's obit. I don't know if you still remember me;but, I hired him when he first came to Vilter. We worked together and golfed together for many years before he changed jobs.
Please accept my deepest sympathy and know that we were close friends.

Dear Emy, I once heard a sermon about this wonderful place which all of us are invited to. Of course it was heaven and was described in purely human terms, but all listening smiled at the thought of such a paradise, and yes, we'd like to go there.... Only here is the catch -- we have to go alone, and often with little notice. And worst of all, we have to leave all those we love to do it. Words can barely convey the saddness I felt for you and your family when Mary called to tell me you had lost Bob. It is something every wife and family everywhere can relate to. I hope that picturing heaven and how wonderful it must be for Bob to be there -- and most importantly, the thought that you two will be reunited someday -- will help you through your future years. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you go forward. Hugs. Susie

Emly & Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family - Bob so much loved his family deeply and talked about all his grandchildren all the time. I worked for Bob for 12 years as his sales secretary and we have so many wonderful memories. Whether it was keeping up with the score on the PGA Tour, or Bob bringing in those wonderful homemade cookies that Emly and her mom made for us every year. Bob was always there for me as far as business and on a personal level. I was so happy for him when he was able to retire and move to Southport for fishing & golfing with Emly - but God had other plans for Bob. Selfishly I want want Bob here - but his passing makes heaven a whole lot sweeter! :) Emly, please let me know if there is anything I can do for you or the family. Love, Tammy

I worked with Bob on the ice plant in Raleigh now owned by Reddy Ice Co.
He was a great help and resource for general information, but particularly with the three Vilter screw compressors that are the heart of our operation. Bob always demonstrated the utmost in professionalism and could put very compilcated situations into terms I could understand. Though only here a few years, I think Bob reached the status of "Southern Gentleman".
I will miss him greatly.
