University of Wisconsin-Madison Water Ski Team - 'Fall, 2008'
Ross Rettler
December 30, 2008
On behalf of The University of Wisconsin-Madison Water Ski and Wakeboard Team, I offer the most wholehearted sympathies out to Scott’s wife Karen, his sons Nick and Sam, and everyone else within the water ski community affected by the passing of the water ski patron, Scott Coley. His love and dedication to the sport of water skiing and its collegiate community was unprecedented and simply extraordinary. He was a doer. Scott’s visions, actions, passion and determination were, and will always be recognized and greatly appreciated. The world of water skiing was lucky to have him as a friend and pioneer and is a better place because of him. Our team will miss him dearly.
If there is a lake somewhere out there with glassy calm water, the perfect course and a ramp of gold, I hope Scott is there. He deserves it. Well done and thank you Scott!

We were very sorry to hear about Scott. We go back to the 50s and family get togethers at the farm in North Prairie. Scott was a unique person and was always thinking of a better way to do something. I know that everyone he touched was better for the experience.

I'm grateful to have known Scott. I would often see him in his Jeep on St. Helena Road, traveling to Hustisford or home on Butternut Court. I remember him as an advocate for Lake Sinissippi and a supporter of the lake community. His presence and spirit will be missed.

Karen, Nick and Sam;
I know that at this time no words will help ease the pain of having lost the most important person in your life. It is hard to understand why the people you love are taken from you so soon, but I hope you can find comfort in knowing you all were a part of a life lived every minute to the very fullest. Please know that your memories are the legasy of Scott's love for you, and your love for him. Always know you are never alone and you are in my heart and prayers.

We were shocked to hear about Scott especially as we had just received the family Christmas photo. Sam and Nick are such handsome young men and I am sure they will grow up to be just as an incredible as their father. We were thankful to have our children grow up together and share some special times. The Justmann's

Scott has left a legacy in the water skiing community not only in Wisconsin but in our country. Our State was put on the map when we became the "Show Ski Capitol of the World" which he was so proud of. He was also the founder of the WI Scholastic and Collegiate Water Ski Teams which have continued to thrive year after year, bringing new young skiers into our sport. Scott's vision and dedication to water skiing will forever be remembered. My deepest sympathy goes out to Karen, Nick and Sam. We all loved Scott and will miss him very much.

My prayers and heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. Scott built our home in 1988 (I was the one who fired the finish carpenter more times than I care to admit). That beautiful home is now the place that holds my most precious memories (my husband died two years ago). Hopefully you and your family can find that special place or activity that will forever fill you with your special memories of Scott. My world is a better place for having known him.

Family get togethers in North Prairie, whether in the Summer when Scott would drive those old cars around the farm fields(well under age ofcourse) or in the winter sliding down what seemed like mountains on metal saucers.
Gatherings at the farmhouse...just far enough from Wayland to be out of reach(at least they pretended they didn't know). We even did a little skiing.
Summers "working" the basketball camps, where being a counselor meant we could do about anything.
Neutral drops with the Falcon and the T-bird.
Being townies and having the best of both worlds.
The Gasthaus or East side bar (finally legal) trying to figure out what we would be doing in 10 years.
We grew up and lives got busy but Scott was a good friend and I know everyone he touched is better for the experience.

Scott was a great friend, an amazing builder and a patient teacher. He helped us make two wonderful lake cottages which our family has grown up in and enjoyed for many years. Our son's love of water sports is due largely to Scott's dedication to the ski club and it's members. He will truly be missed.

What I remember about Scott is his love for his family and his enthusiam for boating and sking. What a great smile he had. I am so sorry for your loss Karen. I am sure that Nick and Sam will mature into incredible men with the example their father set. We will be at the visitation on Tuesday. Peace be with you at this heart-aching time.

I worked for Scott for almost 6 years. He was a great boss and kind person. He will be greatly missed. He was always so busy with one project or the other. Never an idle moment. This was someone who really enjoyed people and wanted to participate in the neighborhood and the environment. A loss to his family and many friends. He will be missed.

My brother, Scott, loved waterskiing and actively advocated for the sport in Wisconsin, having served as the President of the Wisconsin Waterski Federation for several years. He was instrumental in Tommy Barlett's induction to the Wisconsin Sports Hall of Fame. He was serious about the economic value that the sport brings to Wisconsin and many people would know his serious side. As a sibling, we knew his jokester side. He was one who would have some crack up humor to all family gatherings and photos. He was also extremely proud of all that members in our family have accomplished and he often gave me guidance, encouragement and help when I needed it. He loved his family and we will all miss him and his sense of humor when we get together. Love you, Scott. Connie
