Stewart Elliott Obituary

Elliott, Stewart C. Of Waukesha passed away on October 10, 2017, just shy of his 87th birthday. He was born in Illinois but moved to Dousman as a teenager and attended Waukesha High School where he found great friends and great success on the swimming team. He went on to swim at the University of Michigan where he was an All American and captain of the Michigan Swimming team that captured the Big Ten Title and NCAA title in 1952. He met Mary Muller in Ann Arbor and they married after graduation and moved to Wisconsin. In 1957, he purchased a small Ace Hardware store in Elm Grove and, with the help of his sons and employees grew that into four hardware stores in Elm Grove, West Allis, Muskego, and Pewaukee. He stayed actively involved in the stores and enjoyed working in the warehouses into his 80's. He took great joy and pride in his employees and their accomplishments. It was common to have several siblings from the same family working at Ace. It is a testament to him that so many employees remained at the stores from high school through retirement. He loved the outdoors, especially the cabin at Red Cedar Lake and took great delight in spotting wildlife there, going on boat rides, and just walking through the woodlands. He had a terrific sense of humor and was an eternal optimist. Just like his late wife, he had a fondness for dachshund dogs, even adopting a puppy when he was 82 years old. He is survived by his sister Eileen (Helmut Fisher), three children: Kate (Dale Gruen), Stew (Lisa) and Matt (Kelly), nine grandchildren and one dog (Freita). A celebration of his life will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, November 3rd from 1 PM until the time of memorial service at 3 PM. Followed by a light refreshments and fellowship at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Waukesha Food Pantry or the Hebron House would be appreciated.

Just saw this. Worked at the West Allis store from 1996 to 2001. I will remember him as a great man. Always remembered my name and had fun in the warehouse with him.

We almost feel like family and will miss Stew as much as we did Mary. We became close friends not only as two Scotsmen and Ace Hdwre store owners but as next door neighbors at the lake. We know how difficult his last years were for this proud indepependent but optimistic guy. He was so proud of each of his children and grandchildren. He kept me abreast of the hardware industry which we both loved ( exactly the same age) and the four of us looked forward to our regular dinner out when at the lake. He will be missed. Our sympathy to all the family. Bob and BJ

Ace Hardware was my first real job, and Mr Elliott was my first real "boss" who taught me more than I ever realized during the years I worked there in high school and college. Lessons from that job have been with me all my life...with the side benefit of learning many important matters such as the difference between latex and oil based paint; where one would use a sheet metal screw vs a wood screw (not so obvious to a 16-year-old girl I guess); how to draw in the spouses (wives, back in the day) with a great housewares department; where the flapper valves and float balls belonged...and I gained a lifelong appreciation for having the right tool for the right job. I still think of that job with affection and appreciation (for many years my dream was to open an Ace Hardware on Sanibel Island!), and Mr. Elliott is a big part of that memory. All the best to the Elliott family, your dad was an amazing influence on countless young people!

We knew him as Stu', but always addressed him as Mr. Elliot'. I don't believe he ever demanded this salutation; rather he earned it, every day, through his kindness and respectful treatment of employees and customers alike.

Mr. Elliot was the first boss' that I truly cared about impressing. The culture that he created and grew with his business made you want to over-achieve, and stick around, and bring your siblings in. He entrusted significant responsibility to young people, helping them to grow and embrace a strong work ethic.

One of the finest and most inspirational individuals I have ever known. Rest in peace, Mr. Elliot.
