William Dicus Obituary

Dicus, William T. M.D. Passed away with little suffering, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, October 14th, 2017 at the age of 80. Beloved husband of Jane (nee Cassidy) for 48 years; proud father of Meg, Andy, and Carolyn; and adoring grandfather of Wren, Elizabeth, and Cassidy; Bill was devoted to his family. His inner family circle includes his late sister Sandy and her children Eli and Bob as well as his sons-in-law, Chad and Ned. Any opportunity to gather with his family brought him great joy. Bill had boundless curiosity and a remarkable mind coupled with a generous and loving spirit. Drawn to the stories of the people around him and to the beauty of the natural world, a sparkle in his eye made his enthusiasm contagious. He loved to experience the world with Jane, often through the lens of a camera (or two!). He was a prominent orthopedic surgeon in the community who cared deeply for his patients. He joyfully offered his expertise, tending to the needs of patients as well as neighbors and friends. His lifetime love of aviation burgeoned while serving in the US Air Force. He became a competitive aerobatic pilot, flew with his family throughout the country, and he and Jane built an RV-8 airplane that he flew in the last years of his life. A true epicurean, his passion for food ranged from foie gras to Egg McMuffins. He deeply appreciated fine wine. He loved classical music and played the piano with great gusto. Guided by his Christian faith, Bill lived a life of compassion and spirituality, meeting with his morning Bible study group for over 30 years and playing a strong role in his church community. Bill with his contagious joie de vie will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A celebration of Bill's life will take place on Saturday, October 21, at 1:00 PM at Eastbrook Church, 5353 N. Green Bay Avenue, Milwaukee. Doors open at 12:15 PM. Family will greet friends at a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Bill's name to the EAA Young Eagles Program to introduce youth to aviation (3000 Poberezny Rd., Oshkosh, WI 54902 or at www.eaa.org/give) or to The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra to support those who share his passion for classical music (MSO, Attn. Tribute, 1101 N. Market St., Ste 100, Milwaukee, WI 53202 or at www.mso.org/support/donate).

Dr Dicus was my orthopedic surgeon. He gave me advice about many things in life that I am very thankful for. As my joints continue to fail, I remember the advice and it has saved me many problems

I am sorry to have missed giving you all condolences but I wanted to say that Bill (and Jane , and the children) , will always remain in my heart, however distant our lives have become. In my faith it is said; "may his memory be for a blessing", and I know that it is.

Dear Jane and family,

My sincere prayers and sympathy for you at this time. I know that Bill will be missed by all but there is great comfort in knowing that he is in our Father's care. I have great joy in that and in also being able to partner with you both in the usher ministry and getting to know you more. God be with you all.

Jane and Family,
Bill was not only my go to Orthopedic Doctor, he was a dear friend for 20 years at our Wednesday morning Bible Study. Stunned and shocked to say the least upon hearing of his sudden death.
Compassionate, caring, insightful and knowledgeable are just a few of the traits that Bill possessed. His laughter and sense of humor I will always treasure. The memories are many and our loss is great.
He treated both Carol and I medically for our many athletic injuries and provided outstanding counsel and referrals. We will miss him and treasure the memories we shared.
We will pray for you and your family for comfort and peace as you deal with this loss.
Love to all of your family and friends of Bill's.

Dear Jane, Megan, Andy and Carolyn,

I will always have fond memories of Dr. Dicus, from growing up next door. He was one of the especially kind grownups I knew, that also seemed like a bit of a kid himself he was fun and funny. I also remember listening to him play the piano with gusto, especially ragtime music. He played those songs loud and fast, it was impressive to my ear and delightful to dance to as a little kid.

I have warm memories of all of you from those days, you were such wonderful and supportive friends to our family.

I'm so sorry for your loss, for all of our loss. I know you will miss Bill, your dad, so much. I wish I could be there to celebrate him with you. I'm sending you lots of love.

My sincere sympathies and prayers go out to you all. Dr. Dicus was the kindest, most caring physician I have known. I loved working with his patients back in the good 'ol days at Columbia Hospital, and also hearing him speak of his airplanes and stunt flying! Quite a man! Bill was first introduced to me by BettyJo Cassidy. He has been a great friend and just a pleasure to talk to every time I see him. A kind and gentle man and that will be repeated by others many times. Love family and life and always more interested in others life rather then his own. My best wishes to all of his family and friends and especially Jane. Bill is a terrible loss to anyone who may have known.

I babysat for Dr. and Mrs. Dicus when Megan was just a baby. I lived a few houses down the street on Newhall in WFB and Dr. Dicus always insisted on walking me home to make sure I would arrive safely. I credit both Bill and Jane with steering me into my nursing career which lasted 35 years. They always had medical journals for me to read and always spoke to me about medicine. I have no idea what compelled me to look up the Dicus family tonight after 40 plus years but when I "Googled" William Dicus name I saw that he had passed away a few days ago. I am so sorry for your loss. Please accept my sympathies.

Bill was a wonderful man. He was a superb doctor and a great guy. I feel privileged to have been associated with him at Columbia Hospital. I loved his upbeat personality and his wit. I wish I could have flown with him in one of his old style planes.

Jane & Family,
Condolences for your loss. His clinic days at Blount on St. Paul were among my favorite, as Dr. Dicus was a joy to work for; rarely did you see him without a smile on his face and a warm "hello." I always enjoyed discussing both orthopedics and aviation with him, and I particularly remember the joy he exhibited while showing off his RV-8 while he was still constructing it. He will be missed and remembered with great fondness.
