Chan Valentine Obituary

Juneau resident Chan Scott Valentine, 32, passed away February 21, 2018, during his brief battle with brain cancer. Chan was born October 15, 1985 in Corvallis, Oregon. He graduated from Crescent Valley High School in 2004, and moved to Juneau to attend college at the University of Alaska, Juneau, where he graduated with a degree in Biology in 2009. Chan fell in love with Alaska, and stayed there after college, working as a naturalist with the Juneau Raptor Center, at the Travelodge, and finally at Byte Computing as an IT specialist and administration support.
During his years in Juneau, Chan befriended everyone he met. His humor and generosity of service were easily given with no expectation of anything in return. Even after surviving a deadly plane crash in May of 2017, he continued to inspire and help those around him.
When he wasn't dreaming about tug boats or being in the water, Chan enjoyed rooting for the Washington Huskies with his family, camping, picking banjo, playing Madden Football on line, swapping stories with friends, and devouring books. Chan seemed larger than life, and will be greatly missed by all.
Chan is survived by his loving wife Amy, parents Scott and Theresa Valentine, brother Lewis and his wife Shweta, Aunts Candice Brown, Mary Taschner, Ann Melchior, Joan Huling; Uncles Thomas, John (Kim), Mike (Jayne), Pete (Cathy), and Paul (Robin) Melchior, many cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lewis and Carolyn Valentine and Don and Lucy Melchior, his Uncle Frank Melchior, Uncle David Brown, and Cousins Robin and Steven Taschner.
A memorial service will be held March 4th, at the Juneau Yacht Club from 3-6pm. A memorial will be planned for Corvallis, Oregon at a later date. People are encouraged to wear flannel, Xtratufs shoes, and/or Washington Husky gear.
In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Amy Ruth Valentine, care of Alaska USA Bank, Juneau or the Brain and Behavior Research Fund at www.bbrfoundation.org

I always enjoyed working with Chan at the Travelodge. We would discuss books, current affairs and general gossip. He had such a sharp wit. In our last conversation, he was excited about getting a Fitbit (he felt that he needed to lose weight) and that he had met someone. I was happy to see that he had married her. Chan was a great guy. It's hard to believe that he is gone.
