Dr. George Brown Obituary

George W. Brown was born November 21, 1937 in North Carolina a few minutes before his twin brother John. Three hours earlier, his wife had been born in Texas. That journey of "soul mates" was in the making.
George graduated from North Carolina State University (honors) with a degree in mechanical engineering. His journey led to a desire to engage humanity in a different way. He received a Reynolds Scholarship to attend Bowman-Gray School of Medicine and graduated as a Medical Doctor in 1964. He and carolyn met in the cadaver lab that first year. Four years later they married just three days before receiving their MD degrees. For the rest of their lives, they walked the same paths and wore out the same shoes.
George's career was focused on children, families and the communities in which they live. In his own words, he was a "Community Pediatrician." His specialization and board certification in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital in Honolulu further enabled him to participate in international and cultural dimensions of the lives of children, families and societies.
As a Commissioned Officer and Regular Corps Reserve in the US Public Health Service (1965-2016), he worked throughout Alaska in Pediatrics, behavioral health, child abuse and neglect, domestic violence and Preventive Medicine-Public Health. Additionally, his work involved migrant farm workers, people in Haiti (tuberculosis-1962), people in Corrections, HIV-AIDS in Africa (2004-2006), the homeless and disenfranchised, Alaska Natives, American Indians, and with development of intervention and collaborative approaches for personal and societal health.
The first prestigious CH Kempe Award from the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect was presented to him "For Distinguished Work in the Field of Child Abuse and Neglect." The Ray Helfer Award from the National Alliance of Children's Trusts and the American Academy of Pediatrics was given for his many multi-dimensional years of service. George received many other local and Alaska awards and was recognized nationally and internationally for his writing, speaking, program developments and commitments that addressed child abuse and neglect.
While in Africa, George founded and subsequently directed the Alaska-Kenya Health Scholarship Program for Kenyan high school students who wish to have health care careers. This 10-year program has successfully provided training and career entry for 42 Kenyan students in medicine, nursing, laboratory, social work, behavioral health, pharmacy and public health. This program will continue.
George's Juneau passions included the Fathers' Café, the Juneau United Medical Providers and Parents (JUMPP) program, singing, the Unitarian Fellowship, Northern Light United Church Men's Breakfasts, the League of Women Voters, in-depth reading and sharing with people. He was a Renaissance man who "walked the talk" and "showed up" to live out his life of Acceptance of Others.
George died on December 14, 2016 of a massive heart attack. It may also be said that he died of a broken heart for the needs of children and their families here and around the world.
George leaves his wife carolyn, daughter Rachel, son Benjamin, grand-daughter Eleanor, brother John, sister Laura as well as countless patients, friends, colleagues and admirers.
In lieu of flowers, George and carolyn encourage support of programs that address the promotion of Peace, Children's Wellness and the Prevention of Child Abuse and Domestic Violence. Memorials may also be made to the Alaska-Kenya Health Scholarship Program. Please direct any communication to 1640 2nd Street, Douglas, Alaska 99824 (Attn: Dr. carolyn Brown).
We celebrate George's life and his influence both now and for the future.

This, late, Dr. Brown, we called him George visited FACT, Fathers and Children Together ~1996-1999. Before learning of his leaving this world yesterday morning, his memory became vivid for the energy he brought to the fathers of the children in those regular events. He had a knack for bringing education and provoking thought about subjects. What can I say more? He brought love into the room, and listened. In fact, he gave support, hope, information, and story telling. Yes, you knew George!? I remember most vividly (paraphrased). Why do we have two ears and one mouth? Listening is more important. Happy Trails George. To we alive and to family of George, please accept my commitment to keep alive (lifting forward) support for life. I feel that George was a bodhisattva (or angel) Peace and working on it, all over Earth. I've kept this pretty general. Love, out.

Dr. George attended my daughter at Palmer Hospital in 1981. She was three and had spinal meningitis. We we scared witless, by his calm and reassuring manner helped us to know that she would be ok. We have thought of him many times over the years when we moved to Massachusetts
Especially when we learned he was in Vermont. I regret not trying to find him sooner. My daughter is now 42 with two wonderful daughters. We will always remember fondly Dr. George.

I knew George when we did our work together in Vermont. I uncovered last week a letter from him and I was about to write. We now live in Atlanta. I am saddened for the loss of this stupendous man. He was influential in so many lives and he taught me a great deal. He cared for our foster babies. Carolyn was equally wonderful and I offer her my heartfelt condolences. It is very plausible that he died of a "broken heart".

An angel has been called home...I am so sad to read of his passing. One of the kindest, most caring men that I have ever met. He did so much good, and now it is up to us to carry on his legacy. The world needs more Dr. Brown's!

I am shocked and saddened to learn of George's death. His passion for helping children and their parents, his passion for life, and love of psychohistory left their mark on me and so many others who had the good fortune to know him. I plan to write a memorial for the newsletter of the International Psychohistorical Association. My wife Geri and I would like to express our sincere condolences to carolyn, the family, and friends.

When Dr. Moss retired I was heartbroken. I couldn't imagine another Doctor who would be able to handle my headstrong son. You can't imagine how relieved and amazed I was when Dr. Brown stepped in to fill the void. He was such a kind man, and a wonderful communicator (not often an easy task with pubescent boys.) My deepest condolences to his family.

Words cannot express the compassion and care Dr. Brown showed my son. We were blessed to have him as his Pediatrician. Dr. Brown continued my son's Medical Care into his late teens. And was going to continue his care for him into Manhood. Dr. Brown will be truly missed. RIP Dr. Brown, we have been blessed to be just a little part of your fantastic time on this earth. My condolences to the Brown family.

I will like to share with the family what has brought me comfort. In the bible God has said that in the future, there will be no more pain, sorrow, or tears. No one will grow old and die. You will be surrounded by friends and family. Life in Paradise will be a delight. There will be no fear. People will be truly happy. God's Kingdom will end all suffering.

My heart is saddened to hear the news of his passing. He took care of my boys and did so with such compassion. When we first moved back to Alaska I had the distinct pleasure of working with a great team of providers, and Dr Brown being one that will be in my mind and heart, he inspired me. He will be missed. Condolences to his family and to those in the community that will feel the impact of his absence. My prayers are with you.

Thank you Dr. George Brown for being a great mentor during my tenure with the Alaska Children's Trust Fund, for helping me take care of my daughter's when they were ill and always inspiring me when we would have discussions or in reading your articles in the newspaper. You will be missed but never forgotten.

such a marvelous man we can all learn something from. After seeing many doctors and counselors he was the one person who reached into my son's mind and heart and helped him open up and accept the help he needed. It was always a genuine pleasure to bump into Dr. Brown on the sidewalks of Juneau, he always remembered us and was just a joy to talk with...

I first became acquainted with Dr. George Brown in 1965, in Anchorage. He and I, and Dr. Carolyn, were on staff at the old Alaska Native Medical Center. George worked with me and Dr. Ken Fleshman on the Pediatric Service. We knew then, from the quality and enthusiasm of his work, that he would have a distinguished career in Child Health.
Over the past 60 years, I've me many leaders I the pediatric field. Few have equaled, and none have surpassed, his passion for the well being and health of children.
Through his life and work, and his example, he made the world a better place. It has been a great honor to have him as a friend.

I am saddened to hear this news. George was a long time colleague in Pediatrics and the field of child abuse and neglect. In implementing and then publishing his experiences in Alaska, Vermont and elsewhere around the world, he shared his wisdom widely. I wish I could get to Juneau this weekend to be at the service, but will instead spend the 4pm hour (mountain time) here in Denver re-reading his papers that were published in our Journal and remember him fondly. My love and condolences to Carolyn and the family.
