Fritz Moser Obituary

Fritz Moser, loving husband and father, passed away unexpectedly at age 63 on Saturday, June 4, 2022 in Anchorage, Alaska.

Fritz was born July 14th, 1958, in Mexico City, Mexico to Hans Joseph (Juan) and Estela Macedo Moser, the sixth of their ten children. The family immigrated to the United States on December 20th, 1959, the same day his wife Patty was born. He loved his country and was so proud when he became a US citizen in 1995.

Fritz and his wife, Patty, loved to tell funny stories and make each other laugh, so the story of how they met was fitting to the wonderful life that lay ahead and carried on to their children. In his twenties and living in San Diego, he had bounced a few checks at the bank where Patty worked. The bank supervisor made him a deal that she'd waive all the fees if Fritz instead spent that money taking Patty out on a date. It was the best deal Fritz ever made, as they fell in love and were married August 27th, 1983!  They moved to Juneau for "just a year or two to have an adventure in Alaska" and to be closer to his parents. Unsurprisingly, they never left.

Fritz waited tables at his family's restaurant and worked as a surveyor and draftsman until 1993 when he took over El Sombrero from his father and partnered with his sister, Liz. For over 25 years, Fritz greeted everyone with his generous smile, and big hugs, taking the time to visit and get to know each person that walked through the doors. Eventually, he passed the torch on to his nephew, Ryan Fagerstrom, but those lifelong friendships and connections continued. In retirement, his social and energetic nature kept him active in his community, working part time at Bartlett Hospital as well as being an active member of Rotary and volunteering with other organizations. He was always available to lend a helping hand to family, friends, or anyone in need.

Fritz had a love and light that showed through in his conversations and actions and he touched the lives of everyone that had the good fortune of knowing him. He was deeply devoted to his wife and family, and above all, cherished laughing and spending time with them.  He was passionate about mountain biking, trail stewardship, skiing, and fishing, and he also enjoyed whale watching, hiking, and paddle boarding with his wife. Fritz never knew a stranger. He cherished each of his many friendships and always had a story to share. Even in his passing, his ever-positive personality and altruistic character will continue to shine on his treasured community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Estela, and his eldest brother, Juan Jr. He is survived by his beloved wife Patty, their three children; Jordan Callahan (Matthew), Phillip (Elia), Riley, and his honorary son, Giampiero of Italy; his siblings: Estela Vaden (Jim), Elizabeth Reynolds (Rick), Gus (Karen), Julie Simpson Porter (Mike), Hans (Tonja), Walter, Paul (Donna), and Erika Fagerstrom (Brent); brothers-in-law, Paul Simpson and Ted Lehrbach; his Juneau nieces and nephews: Paul (Ashley), Kaylie, Mathew, Ryan (Mallorie), Alex (Katie), Eric, Kaitlin, Logan, and Chatham; great nieces/nephew Margo, Poppy, Ford, Rochelle and Solstice, as well as countless cousins, nieces, nephews, tios, and tias in and outside of Juneau.

The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the EMTs, doctors, nurses, and medical staff at Bartlett Regional Hospital, Providence Hospital and Airlift Northwest for their exemplary and compassionate care.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

I knew who Fritz was but didn't really get to know him until one year on the Klondike Road Relay, Fritz was with my team and we shared the same room. At the end of the race there is a huge dance even though most have been up for over 24 hours. This shocks me because I was just talking about Fritz to a friend, that I enjoy a few too many beverages after the race and the next morning people in our room were giving me hell. Fritz stood up and looked at me and said, "You know what Del, you were having fun and ignore these guys, I would drink a beer with you anytime." I never forgot that, how kind, comforting and always defending the underdog from all the prim and proper people of Juneau. Thank you Fritz, I never forgot that statement and I will never forget you.

Fritz was one of the good guys. Always positive. He was a great soccer player and peacemaker when the game got heated. He was so welcoming at the El Sombrero. I remember fondly how he would pass the jogging competition while pushing a stroller always with a big smile. Our thoughts and prayers are with Fritz and the Moser family.

I fondly remember eating at El Sombrero countless times with my wife Marie and our children when they were home. Fritz and his whole family were always smiling and wanting to talk with their customers. It was a wonderful happy time. Losing a spouse is a terrible thing to have to go through and I am very happy that Patty will have the support of her family in this time ofd sadness.
