Gladys "Yakdushi" Aceveda

1927 - 2016

Gladys Friday-Aceveda was born in Angoon/Killisnoo on February 7th, 1927 and passed away on January 4th, 2016.
She was of the Eagle Moeity, Dakl´awedí, Yaa Ayaanasnak Kéet Hit (Killerwhale Chasing a Seal House) and her Tlingit name was Yakdushi which means Killerwhales Singing Alongside the Boat. She worked at the Baranof Hotel and the Salvation Army in Juneau, and in Kake, she worked at the Cannery and also started her own businesses, Ace Variety Store and Timberwolf Cab, which she ran for many years.
Gladys loved Bingo, music, and dancing. When she was at home, she liked to crochet and watch the cooking channel. She was well loved and cared for by the Alaska Marine Highway Crew and was known to "hop" on the ferry all year round. She knew the waters well and could name all the land marks by their Tlingit names. She was friends to all with a warm smile and a twinkle in her eye. She lived her life to the fullest. She especially loved spending time and cooking with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents: William "Billy" and Fannie Friday; her husband, Roy Aceveda, numerous brothers and sisters and children: Carol Aceveda, Manuel, David, William, Della, Kenneth and MaCaria Williams. She is survived by her sons: Roy (Dinah); Paul (Marcia); Leon (Ronda) and Daughters: Deena LaRue, Bonita (Darren) Friday. She is also survived by numerous Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Great-Great Grandchildren.
On Saturday, January 9th at 11am, a Mass of the Resurrection will be held at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary located at 416 5th Street which will immediately be followed by a reception at the Filipino Community Hall. Burial and memorial services will be held in Kake on Monday, January 11th.
