Jack Lesh Obituary

Jack Lesh passed peacefully at home on the Salmon River in Gustavus on February 21, 2021 at the age of 98. He was born July 10, 1922 in Oak Park, Illinois where he and his family lived through his school years. He attended Antioch College in Ohio, where he met and fell in love with fellow student, Sally Townsend, whom he married in 1942. A year later he was drafted into the Army just before his first child was due to be born. In the ensuing years Jack and Sally had their first five children, moved at least six times from one Army base to another, then to Columbia University for medical school on the GI Bill. After graduating he took advantage of an offer from the Air Force who would pay him while he did his medical internship in return for one year of service, moving first to Lansing, MI and then to Spokane, WA. After those commitments were satisfied in 1952 they drove back across the country to settle on Cape Cod where he opened a private medical practice, and where three more children were born.

By 1960, with eight children ranging from age 2-16, Jack and Sally were growing weary of life in the fast lane and wanted the family to experience real wilderness living. So they bought a school bus, converted it to hold a large family and drove and camped across Canada to Alaska. Finding a job in the wilderness proved difficult so eventually they settled in Juneau where he practiced medicine at the Juneau Clinic and St. Ann's Hospital. Shortly after arriving in Juneau they took the family on a short trip to Gustavus where they camped on the bank of the Salmon River. This was the wide open space they had been looking for and they began to spend summers there, finally moving permanently to Gustavus when they bought the Gustavus Inn in 1965.

Struggling to make ends meet with a new business in a remote location, Jack held jobs with the State of Alaska Public Health Service and with SEARHC in its formative years, traveling for work and going home whenever he could. As tourism increased and the Gustavus Inn's reputation for good food and generous hospitality grew he was able to remain at home full time. Jack and Sally spent summers running the Inn and often traveling in the winter months; Jack had studied and become fluent in Esperanto and they visited Esperantists around the world. Finally, wanting more time to travel, they sold the Inn in 1975, keeping it in the family, and moved to their tiny cabin by the Salmon River.

Over the next few decades Grandpa Jack, as he was known to many, could be found guiding kayak trips, building his house, owning a hardware store, working at the Gustavus Inn again, running a second hand shop, working in his bicycle repair shop, patching up minor wounds or setting broken bones, teaching Spanish, gardening, growing berries and trees, volunteering his services to the community, and was always willing to lend a hand or a tool to a neighbor or give advice to a newcomer. He and
Sally often traveled with his three siblings and spouses on one of many Sibling Safaris, or spent winters exploring in Baja.

Sally passed away in 2011 and Jack spent the next ten years reading, studying Spanish, puttering in the yard and hosting daily afternoon tea to family and friends, always with family living nearby or traveling to visit regularly.

Also preceding him in death was his son Peter, and sisters Ruth Deglon and Jeanne Jeffers. He is survived by his brother Don Lesh of Arizona; children Michael Lesh (Marline), Jon Lesh (Carolyn), Jim Lesh (Melanie), Dave Lesh (JoAnn), Sally McLaughlin, Betsy Lesh and Tom Lesh; former son-in-law Tom McLaughlin; and his especially beloved eighteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

I met the Leshes at the Gustavus Inn while doing several travel articles for the Saturday Review ca. 1970 and remember them and the whole experience ever fondly. Somehow the name of a delightful dish Sally made has stayed with me--Halibut Caddie Ganty, if I have it right. David Butwin

Jack Lesh was a caring man whose sweet smile encouraged and cheered anyone happening to have the good fortune to run into him. I always enjoyed going to Gustavus and visiting the Inn. In those early days there was a small bar where one could drop in and have a raspberry shrub- a fine libation and very traditional. The berries to make the shrub came from the copious raspberry patch at the Inn. Dinners at the Inn were also a delicious. Sally and Jack cooked many "tradional American" dishes we loved. Jack was loved by all. A SE Alaskan treasure.

We met jack and Sally in 1984 when we were in Gustavus for an Alaska Discovery kayak trip over to Chichagof with Alaska Discovery. We stayed at the Gustavus Inn and met assorted other Leshes. We eventually bought a cabin and have been going up to Gustavus every summer since. We will miss Jack as we have missed Sally but their spirit will always be in Gustavus.

Jack is one of my fondest memories of summers in Gustavus. He had a way of making a person feel very special. He will be greatly missed but always admired for the love he put into Gustavus. Please, Jack, greet Sally for me.

Back in my ranger days at Bartlett Cove, I called on Jack when we had three hypothermia victims from a fishing boat sinking. He was right there with instructions and I am certain he was responsible for saving the life of one of them. He was a good man and a good friend.

Jack and Sally Lesh were remarkable people. They, and their wonderful family , meant much to Southeast Alaska, and indeed, to all of Alaska. It was an honor to have them as friends.

Jack accomplished a lot in his 98 years. He was a fine medical d0ctor, and I wish he had practiced longer; I am proud to say he delivered my youngest daughter, Laura, in his time of practice, in 1962. He was a very good Director of Public Health for the State of Alaska, also.

I became close to some of his family over the years especially David and Joan, at Gustavus Inn.
All we can say is " We will miss you, Jack, and thank you for the good things you did for many people."

Jack was my sister JoAnn's father in law. I have many memories of visiting with him in Gustavus. He was memorable because he was always happy and comfortable being around the kids and offering advice and encouragement. I had the distinct pleasure as a teenager of going on a week long group Alaska Discovery kayak trip with him, where he was the guide, cook and all around keeper of fun and morale. What fun that was and I learned so much. What a genuine life he led and demonstrated for all of us. He lived it to the fullest. May he rest in peace.

Oh, Leah Family, I am so saddened to hear of Jack’s passing. Even though I have been gone from Gustavus many years now, I still fondly remember time spent with Jack and Sally. We have all been fortunate to have had them in our lives. I have enjoyed sharing stories about Jack’s 80th birthday celebration after all these years! I feel honored and privileged to call Jack and Sally friends.

Jack, as all of you know, was an ambitious person. No one has the perfect words
to make your sadness go away,
but may you find comfort in
knowing how many people
wish they did.

Jack Leah was a wonderful man. He and I worked together starting the Gustavus Emergency Response in the early 80’s, Jack was always kind and had a wonderful smile. I hold fond memories of him. He was helpful to the sick in Gustavus, offering free Medical advise in an emergency. My love to all of his family.
