PAUL LARSON Obituary

Long time Juneau resident, Paul Larson, 79, passed away March 13, 2023. A service will be held at Chapel by the Lake, at 6:00 pm on April 4, 2023. A celebration of life will also be held on July 1st, 4:00 pm at the Lena King Salmon Shelter

Paul was born in Worchester, Massachusetts to Mary and Roy Larson. He graduated from North High School in 1961, Worchester, Massachusetts. Paul then attended Worchester Junior College, and joined the naval reserves in 1964 and was activated and stationed to Panama City, Florida. He met his wife, Phyllis Nunn, on a blind date while stationed in Panama City and they were married on August 17, 1968 in Tallahassee, Florida. Paul and his wife drove to Fairbanks, Alaska, on their honeymoon so that he could continue his education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He earned his bachelors in Fisheries and Masters in Environmental Health Sciences in 1973. After graduation, Paul and his family moved to Ketchikan where he began his fisheries management career with Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Paul and his family lived in Ketchikan until 1976, then made a final move to Juneau, where he lived for the rest of his life. He retired from Fish and Game as the Deputy Director of Commercial Fisheries 2001. Paul spent his retirement years traveling, fishing, hunting, and spending time with family and grandchildren. During retirement he also worked at Eaglecrest, was a gold pan tour guide for Alaska Travel Adventures, and drove a school bus for First Student. Paul and Phyllis traveled across Canada and the United States at least 10 different times, hitting casinos at every possible opportunity.

Paul was a caring and loving father and grandfather. He would do anything for his family and loved spending time with all of them. He was extremely proud of his two children and three grandchildren. In his last years, his grandchildren were a priority in his life. He was affectionately called "Mucka" by his grandsons and he helped raise them into the amazing young men they are becoming. Paul was an avid Red Sox and Patriots Fan and loved watching his daughter and grandchildren play sports. He loved working with his hands, building things, remodeling his house, and gardening. He took pride in being able to solve problems and fix things himself and passed that knowledge and work ethic to his children. He also loved fishing and hunting with family and friends. His favorite holiday was Christmas with his family and bubble lights on the tree.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Larson of Juneau, Alaska; his two children, Paul Larson Jr and Lexie Razor both of Juneau, Alaska; his three grandchildren, Raekwon Razor, Lincoln Razor, and Candace Larson all of Juneau, Alaska; his bother and sister-in-law, Peter and Kathy Larson of Auburn, Massachusetts, his two sisters and brother-in-law's, Sally and Al D'Souza of Plymouth, Massachusetts, and Faye and Jimmy Rossi of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Paul was preceded in death by his son, John Larson.

I will never forget how I met Paul. I was going to college in Juneau, and the Fish and Game softball team was trying to find enough players, or they would have to forfeit the game. Paul called my father to see if he was available to play. My father told Paul that he couldn't make it but he knew someone that could, me. I showed up for the game and had a great night driving in several runs. At the end of the game, Paul asked me if I could play in their next game and join the team. My exact response to Paul was, "Can you put me to work for Fish and Game?" In those days you didn't have to be on a State register, you could be hired right out of the blue. The rest was history. Not only did I play softball with Paul for over 15 years, I wound up working a few seasons for him, tagging and tag recovery, Pink Salmon. Paul and his wife were very good friends with my family and he was the type of individual you like immediately. It was no surprise to me that Paul excelled with Fish and Game. My heart just aches for his family, and the loss of a wonderful man.

I set up the blind date where Paul and Phyllis met and we remained close friends ever since. I have way too many fond memories of good times spent with Phyllis and Paul to list them here, but I want to say how much Paul will be missed in this world, but I look forward to seeing his big smile when we are all together again.

I am Phyllis cousin. I was so impressed with the fabulous marriage that she and Paul had. On their trips to Florida, they woulc stop by and see us in Bakersfield, Ca. We so enjoyed their visits. We went to Juneau and they showed us a fabulous time. Paul was retired and he took us gold panning and a salmon bbq - what fun. He will be missed and we will keep Phyllis and her family in our prayers. God bless
