Suzanne Gemmell Obituary

Suzanne Warner Gemmell passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family from pancreatic cancer, on January 22, 2019.

She is survived by her husband Tom of 44 years; her children Jacob, Jesse Anne (Chris) Heine, Sarah, Jed, Margaret (Tim) Thornton, and Zach; and her seven grandchildren; her siblings Linda (Ed) Leininger, Barbara James, Mike (Jennifer), Pat (Susan), John, and Chris (Laura).

Suzanne was born in South Bend, Indiana on February 17, 1947 to WWII Veterans William Franklin Warner and Virginia Frances Richard Warner. She grew up on her family farm, graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology. She arrived in Juneau on April 1, 1970 and began working at St Anne's Hospital and then later Bartlett Hospital.

Suzanne and Tom married March 9, 1974 at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the BVM, and began their adventure as a Coast Guard family relocating to Kodiak, AK; New York City (Governor's Island); Norfolk, VA; Long Beach, CA: Bainbridge Island, WA; and returning to Juneau. With every new location Suzanne created a warm home for her family and made lasting friendships.

Returning to Juneau in 1992, Suzanne raised her family and worked as a medical technologist at Family Practice Clinic. She had a passion for helping people. Whether it was for a cup of tea, a tray of cookies, a simple conversation, or holiday celebrations, she will be remembered for her hospitality. Suzanne was quietly active in the community volunteering at places such as the Glory Hall, St Vincent DePaul, Senior Lunch Programs, and the Cathedral.

Her family is grateful for the care provide by Family Practice, Hospice and Home Care of Juneau, and Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.

A Funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the BVM on Friday, February 1st at 5:00PM. A reception will follow at St Ann's Hall. She will be inurned at the Shrine of St Therese.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Suzanne's honor to Catholic Community Services, 419 6th St, Juneau, AK 99801 or The Glory Hall, 247 S Franklin St, Juneau, AK 99801.

So so very sorry to hear about my good friend Suzanne. She made my life in Juneau easier and more pleasant. She continued to "look out for me" throughout my time there. I will always have great memories and thoughts of her. She loved her family with all her heart and talked about you all the time.

My sincerest condolences to Suzanne family , May the God who binds up the brokenhearted and comforts all who mourn sustain you during this sad and difficult time (Isaiah 61:1 , 2 )

March 7, 2019

I have thought of and prayed for you all often over the last 4 years since I moved to Montana. Suzanne inspired grace in me and the Family Practice crew. I hope the last 4 years provided good memories that will comfort now. I know Suzanne initially was hesitant to undertake treatment, but she loved you all so much. I would value hearing about her time if you feel like talking or writing. Deb Lessmeier [email protected]

I knew Suzanne only briefly as I lived with Pat Crabtree in January of 2018, but I was so overwhelmed by Suzanne's warmth, her kindness and compassion, and how steady and gentle she was in caring for her friend, especially at a time when her own physical pain was likely not insignificant. I cannot fathom how much you must all miss her. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Tom and family: I am so sorry to learn of Suzanne's passing. What a good woman of faith who had a great love for her family and others. At the same time, I am blessed to have known her wonderful presence in the Church, through the community, and in the neighborhood. I vividly recall her wonderful presents with all the patients at the doctors office. I was always enriched by her smile, faithfulness, care and concern. God blessed us with her life and presence among us. All of you have my prayers and condolences. I will be celebrating Mass for her here in Dallas.

In Christ's peace,
Bishop Edward Burns
