Eleonore F. Johnson

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother Eleonore F. Johnson, 98 years of age. She was a resident at the Lutheran Home in Kane, Pennsylvania.
 Eleonore, called Lori, by her friends was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, on July 19, 1927, to Ludwig and Lina Michel.

 After WWII's end, she met Carl H. Johnson, Jr. in occupied Germany. She came to the U. S. in 1947, and they were married that year in Johnsonburg, PA. Dad was a career man in the Army, so we lived in various places: Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas, and France.  On his retirement, the family lived in Johnsonburg, Wilcox, and then Kane. They were longtime residents on Clay Street until Dad passed in 1989. Mom eventually moved to Pittsburgh and lived there many years until the beginnings of dementia brought her back to Kane at the Lutheran Home where she resided for 11 years.

 She had trained as a seamstress in Germany and many of our clothes were handcrafted, altered or repaired by her. She was known for her strong independence, even fearlessly driving into the city of Pittsburgh to swim at the YMCA. Her varieties of German potato salad were unmatched. Loved her cabbage rolls. We enjoyed her ginger snaps, pizzelles, and snickerdoodles. And delicious strawberry rhubarb pie. She was strong in her faith,  which gave her comfort, and was previously very active in the Presbyterian Church in Kane.

 She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl (1989),  brother-in-law Alvin Johnson (Barbara), sister-in-law Marlene Cook (Carl), and her sons Terry D. Johnson (1983)(Vickie), and Calvin M. Johnson (1993)(Jack).  She lost a daughter, Carol Christine (1949) shortly after birth.

 She is survived by her sister in Frankfurt, Klara Meyer (Manfred),  brother-in-law Gordy Johnson (Ann), her son Curtis Johnson (Kathleen), her daughters Diane Gartz (Steve),  Michele Patrick (Cliff) , 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren along with nieces, nephews, and cousins here and in Germany, and her very good friend Patty Nystrom.

Visitation on Saturday, December 6 from 2-3 pm followed by a memorial service at 3pm at Cummings Funeral Home, Inc.
