Carl Michael Futral, beloved father and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas, surrounded by his loving family. He was 76 years old.
Born in Opelika, Alabama, to Jessie Barge Futral and Ida Flourine Cornett, Carl grew up embracing an active lifestyle that would define much of his character. During his school years in Opelika, he participated in track, baseball, football, and archery, developing both his competitive spirit and precision that would serve him well throughout his life.
Carl's sense of duty led him to serve his country with distinction when he was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1969. Over the course of 26 years, he dedicated himself to military service, specializing as an avionic mechanic, recruiter, and weapons system specialist. His commitment and expertise earned him numerous accolades and culminated in his achievement of the rank of Master Sergeant. Following his military career, Carl continued his professional journey in the civilian sector, working at Union Pacific Railroad, Bombardier, and Ampex Corporation.
In 1976, Carl found his life partner when he married Marianne Lepkowski. Together, they built a strong foundation of love and commitment that sustained them through more than 40 wonderful years of marriage. As a husband, father, and grandfather, Carl demonstrated unwavering devotion to his family, always making himself available to those he loved most.
Carl's generous spirit extended well beyond his family circle. He was deeply committed to charitable causes, particularly supporting cancer treatment for children and participating in Toys for Tots programs. His leadership skills found expression in the early 1990s when he ran administration for an archery club in North Carolina, combining his organizational abilities with his lifelong passion for the sport.
Those who knew Carl will remember him for his remarkable patience, boundless generosity, and loving nature. He maintained a lifelong passion for sports, especially college football, and never missed an opportunity to share his enthusiasm with others. His legacy lives on through his family, who continue to embody the finest examples he set throughout his life.
Carl was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marianne, daughter Stephanie, brothers Victor and Craig, and sisters Barbara Casteel and Becky Smith.
He is survived by his children: daughter Olivia Marie and Michael Hicks son-in-law and sons Michael Aaron Futral and Darcy Futral daughter-in-law and Steven Christopher Futral. His memory will be cherished by seven grandchildren: Ewan Phillips, Aaron Futral, Conner Futral, Jacob Futral, Grace Hicks, Ember Hicks, and Crystal Hicks. Carl is also survived by his brothers James David Futral and his wife Judy, Randy Futral and his wife Denise, Ricky Futral, and his wife Bobby Futral, as well as his sister-in-law Janice Keppler and her husband John Keppler, along with countless nephews, nieces, and cousins who were blessed to know him.
A celebration of Carl's life will be held on June 14, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Countryside Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Disabled American Veterans,
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or First Responders in Carl Michael Futral's memory.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has reached out with condolences and support, as well as to the first responders and hospital staff who provided compassionate care during this difficult time.
Carl's life was a testament to service, love, and unwavering dedication to family and community. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
