Charlotte Patzell Obituary

MANHATTAN - Patzell, Charlotte Anna, 95, passed away Wednesday morning, October 7, 2009, at the St. Joseph Village in Manhattan. She was born November 17, 1913, in Beasley, Texas, the daughter of Peter and Louise (Umscheid) Gros. At an early age the family moved back to the farm in Flush, Kansas. In 1944, she married Clem C. Winter, a widower with seven young children from Andale, Kansas. Mr. Winter preceded her in death on December 15, 1958. She then earned her Licensed Practical Nursing Certification from St. Francis Hospital, School of Nursing, in Wichita. In 1961 Charlotte married William A. Patzell from Manhattan, a widower with two adult married children. Mr. Patzell preceded her in death on November 8, 1993, and shortly thereafter she moved to an apartment at Meadowlark Hills and then finally to St. Joseph's Village, both in Manhattan. Charlotte was a homemaker. She loved to play cards, especially bridge, pitch and pinochle with her family and friends. During her lifetime, she was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Flush, the St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Andale and was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan. She was also a member of the Seven Dolors Altar Society and volunteered at the former St. Mary's Hospital in Manhattan. In addition to both husbands and her parents, Charlotte was preceded in death by five children: Jeanette Landwehr, Evelyn Martin, Alice Bundy, Doris Jaax, and Clem H. Winter. She was also preceded in death by five siblings: Ed Gros, Joe Gros, Duane Gros, Marguerite Spain and Celia O'Donnell Hecht and by three son-in-laws: Walt Pfanenstiel., Marcellus Lingg and Pat Burke. Survivors include children: Marian Stump and husband Don of Kansas City, KS, Darlene Burke of Wichita, William Patzell, Jr. and wife Venita of Manhattan and Mary Patzell Pfanenstiel of Addison, TX. She is also survived by her sister: Helen Kuhn of Manhattan, her brother: Ivan Gros of Lewiston, MT and her cousin: Anna Noll of Manhattan. Other survivors include her sister-in-law: Gudala Gros, Andale, brother-in-law: Leo Hecht, Andale, daughter-in-law: Rita Winter, Wichita, and sons-in-law: Urban Landwehr, Halstead, Marcellin Martin, Andale, and Ed Jaax of Garden Plain. She was affectionately called grandma by 42 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 12, 2009, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan with Father Joseph Popelka as celebrant. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan. A Vigil Service and Rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with a visitation following until 8:30 p.m. Online condolences may be left for the family through the funeral home website at www.ymlfuneralhome.com. TO THE FAMILY OF CHARLOTTE,
I AM SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU. I REMEMBER THE FAMILY REUNIONS IN MANHATTAN AND THE FUN WE ALL HAD. BILL ALWAYS SAID I WAS BUILT LIKE A BRICK (OUTHOUSE) HE ALWAYS MADE ME LAUGH. I HAVE NOT BEEN IN TOUCH WITH MUCH FAMILY OTHER THAN ROSE, BUT SHE HAS KEPT ME UPDATED.
