Dear Family,
My Plains History class at Univ. of Nebr.at Kearney is reading Dr. Miner's book, West of Wichita, this week. We then write a critique and are required to give a brief bio of the author. I was stunned to find that Dr. Miner had just passed in Sept. I am saddened and my sympathies to all of his family.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Craig while he was working "Rebirth of the Missouri Pacific". He was always quick to grasp the facts and he was always a pleasure to be with.
I have just finished re-reading "Rebirth of Missouri Pacific" and it is amazing how well he saw the dimensions a complex business.

Suzi Miner and sons
I have just found about Craig's death (11/18/10). I am truly stunned. One of my favorite people and one of the finest historians I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I had already donated all of my Craig Miner books to the new (2005) Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois. They took over the Illinois Historical Library. Craig and I shared a love of eccentric cars, too. Hope his little Mercedes winds up in a Museum somewhere. SMILE. My tastes, as he knew, ran to large Cadillac convertibles. My best wishes go with each of you.

How sad to hear of the passing of one my favorite WSU professors. He made an impact on my life that has changed me forever, and I have always been grateful to him for that. He will be missed.

Researching a writing project of my own, I discovered the books of Craig Miner. What a Kansas Treasure! I wanted to finish reading the books I chose before attempting to contact him to tell him how much I valued his work. Now, I find that I waited too long, so I write this to his family. Please be comforted by the knowledge that his work will be treasured by so many strangers that he never met but who will have access to information that he preserved. There is a saying that when each person dies, a book of history dies with them. In the case of Craig Miner, a library died, but his writing has at least preserved some of his knowledge and wisdom. I wish I could have met him.

I was a B-school major at WSU back in the 70's, didn't care much for history, but had to take a class for core. Craig Miner taught the class and by semester's end I was hooked on history. Wonderful instructor.

I met Craig in Latin class at SE High. The whole year was spent on Virgil's Aeneid.I think that we had a Latin class party at his house. Many decades later, I saw his name on books of Kansas history and started to read these. I think that I read most of them and this started my enjoyment of reading books about history.

As evidenced by the people's comments, Dr. Miner touched many lives over the years. His love of history made him an exceptional teacher. I'm so glad I was one of those who benefited from his enthusiasm for history. My sincere condolences to his family.

To learn of Craig's passing brought great sadness to both Sydney and I. Having spent many hours, in person, on the phone and in correspondence over the past year while working on the film, Craig held a special place in our hearts. Dear Suzi, My you, Hal, and Wilson accept are sympathies upon the loss of your wonderful husband. Professor Miner left us all too soon. My husband Jim and I had the great joy of taking the History of Wichita from him at WSU - after Boeing moved us to Wichita. It is because of Professor Miner that I decided to pursue my dream to be a historian. I am how a PhD student at KSU. He is a great inspiration. Craig Miner was a good friend of mine at Wichita Southeast (class of '62). At that time he was pretty good at basketball and hosted us often at his "home court" in Eastborough. I sincerely regret that we failed to keep in scholarly touch through the years (as Craig wrote when he signed my senior yearbook). Beyond the great fun we had back then, I knew that Craig had a unbounded capacity for absorbing knowledge and an unique ability to communicate. Watching from afar, I could see these talents reflected in his career as university professor and in his passion as historian of his (and my) beloved homeland Kansas. He left us much too soon - an irreplacable loss for us all.

My sympathies to Suzi and the family. The word came up to Historic Preservation Board in its Monday meeting and we didn't have to have a moment of silence declared, as no one was able to say anything until I finally broke the silence with "What shall we ever do without him?" What, indeed? He has now become a part of the history about which he has written so voluminously and so well. Like Mr. Lincoln, he now belongs to the ages.

My condolences to Suzi, Hal and Wilson. Craig was a great friend, teacher and mentor to me. I have fond memories of the many bicycling trips we took in Western Kansas, searching for the sometimes obscure historic locations that he had written about in "West of Wichita." For me, Craig epitomized what it meant to be a historian and his example eventually led me to pursue my own graduate studies in history. I know Craig will be missed by so many and I am thankful to have such great memories of our Kansas adventures together.

I had heard about his Kansas history books, and my niece and a God-child both had history classes from him. Dr. Miner helped form a significant part of my perceptive and expressive powers during the time I was under his instruction, both as an undergraduate and as a graduate teaching assistant at WSU. Not a day has passed in the last 36 years that I have not experienced a thought or memory that had some connection to Dr Miner and all that he taught me. He did teach me a lot about history, but more importantly, he taught me the art of looking, listening and reading; and then bearing down upon the task until it was thorougly completed. I hope he has forgiven me for becoming a lawyer. Having encountered him has made me a far better one than I could have possibly been otherwise.
Along with my parents and a very few other teachers, he was one of the truly great influences in my life.
Through his students and his books he will live on for centuries and continue to hone young minds and inspire future students to take a critcal and informed view of Western American history. Happy Trails, my friend.

Suzi, my mother just informed me of Craig's death, and I am so sorry for your loss. I lost touch with Craig after I graduated from WSU and left Wichita, but I followed his career with interest all these years by reading all his books as they were published, and I enjoyed all of them immensely. I have so many fond memories of Craig when we were Sig Ep's together, and his professional activities at the start and early in his career at WSU was a driving force for me as I pursued my graduate degrees and my professional career. I always admired Craig's intelligence and enjoyed his friendship at SE High, where we had honors English and played basketball together, even though we never saw each other again after that. On one of my visits to Wichita (from Brazil where I´ve been living for the past 34 years), I picked up his "West of Wichita" book and it transported me back to my Kansas upbringing and filled me with respect for Craig's brilliant scholarship. There are a lot of things that will remind me of Craig. I will think of him when I look at the stars, when I play chess, when I go through the prairie fields, and when I look at the book he gave me. Craig Miner was instrumental in my understanding of the Gray County Seat Fight. His book "West of Wichita" put it all in perspective for me, and he kindly agreed to let me interview him when I made a radio documentary on the seat fight for the Kansas Humanities Council in 2003. I was proud to be one of Craig's students in the early 1970's at WSU, both as an undergraduate and graduate student in History and I remember him well. He had such an excitement for the field of American History, and he passed that enjoyment on to his students. Dr. Miner deepened my love of history. He helped me have a better understanding of the State I was born in. His book on the history of Wichita State University is a “must” read. His, History of Wichita, from its wild past to its crazy entrepreneurs will always be with me. I am saddened to hear about his passing, I had prayed he would kick the cancer. I knew the minors when his mom and dad were alive and lived across the street from us in Eastborough. When I was about 5 years old, I was experimenting with matches in our back yard when I caught some leaves on fire. Stan Minor (Craig's dad) came out with a garden hose stretched across the street and put the fire out, saving Eastborough. I'll never forget their black Doberman Pinsher named Shona.
