Duane Ramsey Obituary

Ramsey, Duane Hughes, 89, died September 26, 2013, at Larksfield Place Health Care Center, Wichita, KS. Duane was born in Wichita on May 23, 1924, to Carl and Minnie Ramsey. His marriage to Jane Elizabeth Kruppenbach in 1952 was blessed with five children. Duane graduated from McPherson College and Bethany Theological Seminary in preparation for 45 years as an ordained pastor at the Washington City Church of the Brethren in Washington, DC. With his guidance, the church ministered to the community by hosting a child care preschool; establishing services for the homeless, including a Soup Kitchen, legal aid and medical clinic; participating in a Group Ministry on Capitol Hill; and mentoring many young pastors and volunteers in the denomination. During his tenure of service to the Church of the Brethren denomination, Duane contributed in leadership and service roles in the church district and on the General Board, and was Annual Conference moderator in 1981. He is predeceased by his parents; brothers, Carl, Jr., and Elven Ramsey; sisters, Almeta Case and Geraldine Neace; and grandson, Aaron Melhorn, with whom he shared a love of baseball and the Yankees. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his sons and daughters, Katherine (Mark) Melhorn of Wichita, Barbara (Bruce) Wagoner of McPherson, Michael Ramsey and Gina Sutton of Wichita, Nancy (Gregg) Grant of Tulsa, OK, and Brian (Jennifer) Ramsey of Peachtree City, GA; his grandchildren, John (Julie) Melhorn, Hannah Melhorn, Adam (Rebekah) Wagoner, Joel (Katie) Wagoner, Rebekah Wagoner, Katherine Ramsey, Spencer Ramsey, Taylor Sutton, Trevor Grant, Lily Grant, Peter Ramsey, Mitchell Ramsey, and Thomas Ramsey; great-grandson, Jacob Melhorn; his brother, Warren (Marilyn) Ramsey; and many nieces and nephews in 3 generations. The words from a hymn based on Numbers 6:24-26, spoken at Duane's retirement from his pastorate, are again appropriate, "May the Lord, mighty God, bless you and keep you forever, grant you peace, perfect peace, courage in every endeavor. Lift your eyes and see God's face full of grace forever. May the Lord, mighty God, bless and keep you forever." In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with: First Church of the Brethren, 1103 N. Jefferson St., Wichita, KS 67203; Washington City Church of the Brethren, 337 N. Carolina Ave., SE, Washington, DC 20003. Services are Pending. Downing & Lahey Mortuary East. Share tributes online at: www.dlwichita.com

I learned a lot from this man who carried himself with dignity and kindness for all. He was patient with me as a BVSer in DC who did not have patience with too many people at the time. Thank you sir for your leadership.

I remember a young Duana Ramsey and his wife, Jane coming to pastor the Washington City Church of the Brethren. I believe Jane was pregnant with Kathy.Duana was pastor during childhood and young adult years. Duane baptized me which continues to be a highlight of my spiritual growth. He performed the marriage ceremony of me and my husband almost 50 years ago. Duane was also a great comfort to my mother, Thelma Cogswell when my father passed away. He and Jane are a large part of our sweet memories at Washington Church.
