Sorry this is late, I was unaware of his passing until his brother Dale just passed away. Duane was one of the first batters I umpired in my first game behind the plate. When he stepped into the box to hit his wrists hung out over the plate. I thought to myself "How is this guy going to hit anything". The first pitch was inside off the plate about an inch or so. I called it a strike. He leaned back and talking to himself saying "that pitch was inside". He continued talking to no one in particular about that pitch being inside. Anyone who played with him knew how he was always talking to no one in particular about an umpires call. Very rarely arguing directly with the ump unless he was really riled up. Then after another pitch (which was a ball) he said to the catcher smiling how could that first pitch be a ball? And I was thinking 'how can he tell that, his wrists are hanging over the plate' he can't possibly tell that pitch was inside. The next pitch came in again a little inside about an inch off the plate. I threw up my right hand and said "TWO". He spun around and looked me right in the eye and hollered so everyone on WSAF field # 2 could hear him (and we were playing on WSAF #1) "two what"? It was in that moment that I had a man who knew his game. I sheepishly replied "too, too far inside to be a strike" the count is 2-1. Duane had a good sense about fast pitch softball, and everything in general. After he quit playing he himself took up umpiring and we 'worked' many games together on the field. We even got an article written in the papers together with a picture way back in 1982. He and his brother Dale were important cogs in the world of Fast-Pitch softball. I will miss them both.

Duane umpired our fastpitch softball games with the Wichita Arrows for years, and he was always such a class act. He was pleasant and conversive, and believed so much in the product we were putting out there. His silent endorsement was so special to us. He was a pro's pro, and was always proud of his family and his profession. God got a good one!!!

I met Duane in the late 1960's while playing Fast-Pitch Softball. We were teammates one season and opponents the rest through the 1970's. He was a very good player and an even better guy. A hoot to be around. I still enjoy some of his witticisms.
Goodnight, and Godspeed Duane, and thank you for the wonderful memories from long ago. Unforgettable.
