Edith Roper Obituary

Roper, Edith Theresia (Jung) 92, long-time resident of Garden City, KS, passed away Monday, June 27, 2016 in Wichita, KS. She was born February 23, 1924 in Merchweiler, Germany. At age five, Edith sailed alone to her new home in America, having been too ill to make the earlier voyage with her family. Edith was raised in New York City. It was there, on the Coney Island boardwalk, she met a handsome young sailor, Donald Keith Roper, who had just returned from the Normandy Invasion. They were married February 2, 1945. Following the birth of son Stephen in 1946, they moved to El Dorado, KS. In 1951, shortly after the birth of daughter Marilyn, the family moved to Ellis, KS. They resided there until 1961 when they relocated to Garden City. Edith enjoyed a long career at The Vogue Shop helping dress the fashionable women of Southwest Kansas. One of her proudest accomplishments was becoming a naturalized citizen in 1982. Her favorite activities included cooking for family and friends, fishing at Cedar Bluff, playing bridge, bingo and Rummikub, as well as cultivating beautiful roses. She will be fondly remembered as a loving, caring, sassy mother, nana and friend. Edith was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Zender Jung Baumann Herman; brother, Benno Baumann; and her husband of nearly 65 years, Donald Roper. Survivors include children, Stephen Roper (Connie), Ft. Collins, CO, and Marilyn Rine (Brad), Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Brett Roper, New York, Jennifer Roper, Ft. Collins, CO, Rebekah Rine, Mallory Rine-Walston (Shelly), Wichita, KS; devoted friend Barbara Boddiger, Garden City, KS. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2016, at St. James Lutheran Church, Garden City, KS, followed by the 3 p.m. gravesite service at Mt. Hope cemetery, Ellis, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. James Lutheran Church, 1608 N. Belmont, Garden City, KS 67846 and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202.
