Kathleen Ebersole Obituary

Ebersole, Kathleen Fisher, 57, of Alexandria, Va., died May 8, 2005, at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, Alexandria, after a long illness. She was a native of Wichita, having been born here February 2, 1948; she had lived in the Washington, D.C., area for more than 24 years. Mrs. Ebersole received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wichita State University. She began her journalism and writing career while a student at WSU, working for the Wichita Eagle and eventually reporting for the newspaper. She moved to Kansas City, Ks., in the early 1970s and reported for a group of suburban Kansas City newspapers. Following that, she joined the staff of The Kansas City Star as a general assignment reporter and later became its medical and science writer. During her years in Virginia, she was a reporter and then editor of the APA Monitor, a monthly publication of the American Psychological Assn., Washington, D.C., and for nearly 10 years was editor of The American Gardner published by the American Horticultural Society of Alexandria. At the time of her death, she was a senior editor of Old House Journal, a bi-monthly publication of Restore Media, LLC., of Washington. She was the author of several books, including a Taylor's Guide to Shrubs, Herbal Remedies, Complete Guide to Water Gardens; and she co-wrote Herb Gardening for Dummies. She contributed articles to American Gardner, Organic Gardening, Physician's Garden, and Wild Garden magazines as well as writing for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden handbook series. She is survived by her husband, David A. Ebersole of Alexandria; three sons, Ed Sipult of Wichita, Kerry Sipult of Alexandria, and Hart Ebersole of Wilmington, NC; a sister, Judy Finnell of Wichita, and a grandson. Family memorial services will be held Sunday, May 15, 2005, at River Farm, near the family home in Alexandria. Eberly Wheatley Funeral Home.
