Mildred Armstrong Obituary

Mildred "Mickey" McCoy Armstrong died Monday, November 17 in her home. She was born December 24, 1923 in Wichita, Kansas to Charles Patrick and Alfleda Mae McCoy. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Dr. Charles "Chuck" McCoy and Lyle McCoy, her husband Edward "Pete" Armstrong, and her son-in-law, Joseph Hughey.

After attending Cathedral High School, Mickey graduated from Wichita University serving as alumni secretary for the university upon graduation. During her collegiate years, she served as president of Alpha Tau Sigma, her junior class, Young Republicans and Mortar Board. From 1992-1995 Mickey and her husband co-chaired WSU's Campaign for Students raising funds for scholarships. Her Shocker connections remained strong throughout her life.

On June 13, 1948 Mickey married Pete Armstrong. They raised four girls and were life-long residents of Wichita.

She was secretary of the Women's Association of the Wichita Symphony, president of the Junior League of Wichita, president of the Wichita Historical Museum and the Sedgwick County Health Facilities Council and president of the Altar Society at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Mickey had a deep commitment to her city, university and church and was a dedicated volunteer throughout her life.

She is survived by her four daughters: Sally Hudnall (John), Lawrence, KS; Marilyn Hughey, Santa Fe, NM; Carolyn Virden (Phil), Lake City, CO and Susie Palmer (Stuart), Jackson, WY and Wichita, KS. Also surviving are her 10 grandchildren: Christopher Hudnall (Laura), Denver, CO; Andrew Hudnall, Omaha, NE; Scott Hudnall, Lawrence, KS; Sarah Greenall-Sharp (Russell), Wichita, KS; Lily Virden, Lake City, CO; Annie Palmer, Wichita, KS; Emily Palmer, Wichita, KS; Dasha Capell (Brian), Seattle, WA; Meredith Hughey (Christina), Madison, WI and Katherine Schowengerdt (Jesse), Butler, MO; as well as her great grandchildren: Mateo Hudnall, Clark Capell, Henry and Thomas Hughey.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Catholic Student Center, 1810 N. Roosevelt, Wichita, KS 67208 and Wichita State University College of Fine Arts (Mildred F. Armstrong Scholarship Fund), 1845 Fairmount St., Wichita, KS 67260.

Services and Burial have taken place.
