William "Bill" Smith
November 24, 1936 - January 3, 2021
Salina, Kansas - William "Bill" Smith, surrendered his life on January 3, 2021. He was born November 24, 1936 in Ashtabula, Ohio to Florence (Hummer) Smith and Richard Smith.
He worked the ore boats on Lake Erie before joining the Air Force on September 11, 1956. He completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, was stationed at Schilling AFB Salina, Kansas, Larson AFB Moses Lake Washing, Wright Paterson AFB Dayton, Ohio, U-Tapoc AFB Thailand, Clinton Sherman, Oklahoma, Plattsburg AFB New York, Kunson Korea AFB two times, Cannon AFB New Mexico, McConnell AFB in Wichita plus ARC Lite, TDY, England, Guam, and other plus a number of schools. He retired in 1983 after serving 27+ years in Strategic Air Command.
He married his love, Harriett Elaine Cline on January 10, 1959 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. He was so looking forward to their 62nd Anniversary.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Harry Cline; sister, Maxine Heileman; sister-in-law, Diann Cline; brother-in-law, Kenneth John.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Lisa Smith; sons, Scott Smith (Erin), Mark Smith (Cheri); grandchildren, Spenser, Emily, Taylor, Connor, Kylie, Logan, and Quinn Smith; great-grandchildren, Kaiden, Jaxson, Jameson, Cash, Colt; sister, Sue Ellen Shriner (Lee); his mother-in-law, Hazel Cline; brother-in-law, Marvin Cline; sisters-in-law, Deb Lefort (Stan), and Marlene John; and many nieces and nephews.
His love for his country and quiet pride in the Air Force was deeply rooted in his life, he always missed it. His love for family is the only thing he loved more and his little dog, Annie.
There will be a Memorial Mass on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Cremation was chosen in January. There will be military honors and a gathering of family and friends at the Cathedral after mass for a small memorial for him.
