Woodrow Bird Obituary

Bird, Woodrow "Woody", 88, passed away June 8, 2007 in Sedgwick, Kansas. Born September 22, 1918 in Ardmore, OK to Effie and Samuel Bird. He was a long resident of the Wichita area since 1923. He graduated from Wichita High School North in 1938. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Corp from 1942 to the end of the war. He was part of the team that prepared the B-29 Enola Gay for its famous mission in August of 1945. In 1958 he started to work as a salesman for the Innes Corporation. His hobbies were model railroads and the local Airstream Club, at one time being its president. His wife Lela Ida Bird preceded him in death in 2005. They had been married for 65 years upon the day of her death. Four children survive him, daughter Karen (Van) Morland of Sedgwick, son Woodrow (Donna) Bird II of Valley center, son Lewis (Vicki) Bird of Roanoke, TX, daughter Christine (David) Bower of Wichita, KS. Twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren also survive him. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Salvation Army 350 N. Market Wichita, KS 67202. Mr. Bird, you know I don't believe I've ever called you anything but Mr. Bird, I guess I'm your family's Eddie Haskell. You probably know how much you and your family meant/mean to me, but in case you don't we'll laugh about it at a later date. I know there are stories I've not heard or have forgotten that Pop told and after reading of you WWII experiences, there must be other stories you could tell. May God Bless your family, He Blessed you with a large one, (now there's a play on words you would have chuckled at, but if you didn't raise a large one I might not have met my best friend),it's a wonder you didn't become an ornithologist or maybe you were but then that title surely was supplanted by, father. -Gary

I first knew Woody almost 80 years ago when we both lived on North Walnut. I also knew both Woody and Lela because we live on North Armstrong. He was such a great guy.
