Barry Wallace Obituary

Barry Daniel Wallace, 47, a beloved husband and Father of Lenexa, KS passed away at home on Tuesday evening, October 17, 2006. Barry was born April 17, 1959 in London, England. He started playing professional soccer at the age of 16 with the London club Queens Park Rangers and played there before signing here in the States at the age of 19 with the Tulsa Roughnecks. He played professional soccer for Tulsa, Wichita, Minnesota and Seattle before settling with the Kansas City Comets and retiring in 1990. Barry contributed a great deal to youth soccer, coaching his daughter Sophie's premier soccer team as well as several other teams throughout the years. Barry was only diagnosed in late August with a fast growing cancer. He showed no signs of being ill up until August at which time it aggressively took over. He had a wonderful life fulfilling his dream of playing professional soccer at the highest level possible around the world and enjoying his family, friends and passions. He was well-known and respected by anyone involved in soccer in the United States both professionally and locally. He was a man of his word who lived with great character and moral convictions. Barry will be greatly missed, but remembered with love and admiration. Barry was preceded in death by his parents (James and Violet Wallace) and Sister (Gladis Martin). He is survived by his wife, Kristi Wallace, two children (Daniel and Sophie Wallace), three step-daughters (Stephanie, Stacie and Sydnie Gazonas), three sisters and one brother still in England (Sylvia Griffith, Brenda Condon, Linda Osborn, Jimmy Wallace) as well as many other relatives including several nephews and a niece. A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, October 23, at the Porter Funeral Home 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barry's memory to Premier Bank for his daughter's college fund. (Arrangements: Porter Funeral Homes & Crematory, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS (913) 438-6444)

Hi everyone , I have been truely humbled by every person who has taken time out to offer there thoughts, prayers and memories of a truely great person .. Barry Wallace ..my uncle , Barry left these shores when i was a 12 year old , he lived with me and my family for 18 months back in 1977-78 when he was playing for QPR in the english 1st division and as a young lad i was truely in awe of him , not everyone has a pro footballer living with them , i was so proud, he was more of a brother than an uncle and i looked up to him ... he was my hero.. he taught me how to play the game i love from a very young age and my earlist memories are of him playing for a local side called Strone FC.. , i am 39 now and i have truely missed him since the day he left us in the UK to bring joy and happiness to so many people in the USA , Yes i got to see him when he used to come over .. the last time was with Daniel and Sophie and few Christmas's ago.. over course we say at the time .. Yeah.. i will see you next year .. look forward to it .. unfortunately that was not meant to be ... when he became ill there was so much i wanted to tell him , but he was to ill and the time was taken so fast , my Mum and her sisters visited him just before he died .. and i glad my mum passed on my love i had for him. Barry will be remembered for a long long time because every child he taught every person he met he left an ever lasting... special place in their hearts for him.. He WILL be so sorely missed he was ,as so many people have said .. a gentleman, a man of his word and lived with an honor that was second to none.if i am half the man he was i will be very happy.. god bless my dear uncle , i love you .... Dear Wallace family,
I was shocked and terribly saddened to just now hear of Barry's passing. He was a good friend to our family when he lived in Tulsa. I was fortunate to have also met his parents and siblings. We shared some good times together. His parents, Jim and Vi, were the salt of the earth. I knew Barry as a conscientious, dedicated young man with a great sense of humor, in addition to being a gifted athlete. It is a real tradedy that he has been lost at such an early age. My heart goes out to Kristi and the kids, as well as the entire Wallace family.

Kristi and Family, I was honored to get to know Barry. I'm not sure if we have formally met except possibly at the youth soccer fields. I have fond memories cheering for Barry when I was in high school and he played for the Comets. I was fortunate later in life to get to play soccer with him as he worked with a number of my college friends from Baker University. He was a class guy and I only hope that I can touch as many people's lives as he did through this fun game of soccer. You are in our prayers.
Sincerely,

Kristi and Family,

What can I say that has not been said with all these wonderful entries. Know that Barry meant a tremendous amount to me and all who knew him. He embraced me from the first day I met him at Gear, along with all of those whom he met during our rec indoor days! His actions truly spoke louder than his words. Believe me, I've tried to take some of his characteristics to heart and apply them in everyday life. He will be missed, but not forgotten. Please know our family's thoughts and prayers are with you!!

Respectfully,

Kristi and family:
My sincere condolences to you all. I will certainly miss my friend, and Barry left no doubt in my mind that in addition to being a devoted husband and father, he was also your dear friend as well. I worked with Barry for only a year, but I was fortunate that we maintained our friendship; and each time we got together, I managed to gain some pearls of wisdom from him. His character and integrity were of the highest degree. You should all be extremely proud of him for the fingerprints that he left on so many hearts.

Barry was a man of tremendous character, with a true appreciation for life. I learned a lot from Barry in many aspects, but most importantly about how important it is to live life according to the principles in which you believe. I feel privileged to have known him.
May God bless your family, and bring peace to your hearts through fond memories.

October 20, 2006

Kristi and family,
Please know that the soccer family of Oklahoma Soccer Association will always remember the smiling young man who came to Tulsa in 1980 and won our hearts with his courageous play and skill. He was a fan favorite and was always available for training sessions with teams at the club level or high school level.
I never appreciated his ability to send the long ball accurately until I saw him play on a natural grass surface and place ball after ball on the leading foot of a striker 60 yards down the field!
But most of all, I remember the joy he had for the game. Whether it was outdoor or indoor, his enthusiasm was infectious and we came to love him for that.
I am running a small article on Barry in the Oklahoma Soccer newsletter that will go out in November to 37,000 soccer fans. I know that they will all say prayers for you and the family and they will give you strength to carry on.
When you have the time, please contact me so I can publish more info on how our members can donate to the college fund you have set up.

I had known Barry for less than two years when one afternoon sitting in his office talking "shop" he opened an envelope and inside were two soccer cards with a note explaining the thrills Barry had brought to this fan and his son and asking for Barry to autograph the cards from his playing days in Tulsa. Needless to say I was amazed and it opened up a new world and friendship between us. I came to learn that almost everyone associated with big time US soccer knows him. Barry was as humble as he was kind. He will be missed. His spirit will live forever in the lives he touched...

Kristi and family, I was so sorry to hear of Barry's illness and passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.
Barry was one of my heros as a teenager watching him play soccer for the Tulsa Roughnecks. He was a great player and as I finished college, I was fortunate enough to get to play with and against him in the Tulsa area. It is one of my fondest memories as a soccer player to get to play with someone of his caliber.
I wasn't very close to Barry but we would run into each other occasionally in KC, one time on a flight, a few times at the gym and at the indoor facilities in Lenexa and he would always remember who I was which really meant alot to me! He was truly a great guy and someone I won't forget.
