Dane Nelson Obituary

Dane William Nelson, 22, of St. Joseph, Mo., formerly of Kearney, Mo., died Sunday, January 18, 2009, as a result of a single car auto accident in Clinton, County, Mo. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at First United Methodist Church, 1000 E. 92 Highway, Kearney, MO 64060. Burial in Fairview Cemetery, Kearney. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dane Nelson Music Scholarship at Central Methodist University, Fayette, Mo., or First United Methodist Church for camp scholarships. Dane was born March 7, 1986, in North Kansas City, Mo., the son of Tim and Ellen Chick Nelson. He was reared in the Holt/Kearney area and was a 2004 graduate of Kearney High School. Dane attended Central Methodist University, graduating in 2008 with a teaching degree in music. At the time of his death Dane was a first year music teacher, teaching students from 6th to 12th grade at Maysville High School. On June 21, 2008, in Fayette, he married Mallory James. Together they made their home in St. Joseph. Dane was a member of National Education Association, Missouri Bandmasters Association, Missouri Music Educators Association, the Platte City Community Band, and director of the Praise Band at First United Methodist Church in Kearney, where he had been a member since his childhood. He was also a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, James W. Chick; and two cousins, Katrina Nelson and Nicole Schreiber. Dane is survived by his wife, Mallory, of the home; his parents, Tim and Ellen Nelson, Holt, Mo.; a sister and her husband, Kirstin and Drew Marriott, Kirkwood, Mo.; his maternal grandmother, Jane Chick, Brookfield, Mo.; his paternal grandparents, Ed and Shirley Nelson, Red Wing, Minn.; his father-in-law and step mother-in-law, Bob and Colleen James, Rockford, Ill.; his mother-in-law and step father-in-law, Traci and Tom Owens, Winnebago, Ill.; and his sister-in- law, Lyndsey James also of Winnebago. Dane had a deep faith in God, and a passion for music, which he shared in praise music and teaching. He dearly loved Mallory and his family. He will be missed. I have been drawn to this verse since Monday. Everytime I think about our loss of Dane, the Lord has drawn me here. I think about the example he was to every life touch ed by him, and I know that we are all better Christians and humans because he walked with us.

He will be missed. It is so difficult to lose someone so close and to try and make sense of it all(we buried our son/brother almost a year ago). Nelson Family,
Me and Kirstin grew up together, good friends playing softball as hard as we could. Your family always made me feel comfortable in your home and I was so excited when you moved out to the country close to us. We loved Dane so much. He truly was a part of our family circle. I was Dane's childhood caregiver from the young age of 6 weeks. He was a delightful child to care for along with his sister Kirstin. I have such great memories of fun times with this litte tyke, camping and fishing from our pontoon boat. He even taught our grandson to ride a bike without training wheels at BSSP. My heart is aching with this terrible loss. He will be missed by many but I can see him now in his new home as Director of the Heavenly Choir! We do not always understand God's plan but He certainly chose Dane for a a special reason. We Love you Dane.
