Daniel Sweeney Obituary

Daniel D. Sweeney
Died August 17, 2025
Daniel "Dan" Derrick Sweeney passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, following a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Dan was born to Russell William and Peggy (Derrick) Sweeney, Sr. on September 27, 1945 in Cincinnati, OH.
Dan grew up in Cincinnati, graduating from La Salle H.S. and Xavier University prior to commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the Artillery Corps in the U.S. Army. Dan married Nancy Grever September 21, 1968 at St Mary's, Hyde Park, Cincinnati, OH.
Dan was very proud of serving his country and was always ready for a handshake and salute to anyone in uniform; even after alzheimers had stolen much of his memory.
Following his military service, he joined Clark, Schaefer, Hackett and Company as a CPA, eventually becoming partner. In 1986, Dan was hired by G and J (Gross and Jarson) Pepsi Cola Bottling Company as CFO, retiring as COO in 2008. He was President of the Pepsi Cola Bottlers' Association and served on the Board of Dr. Pepper which afforded Nancy and him opportunities for international travel to Pepsi and Dr Pepper Conferences.
Having spent his childhood summers, in Leland, MI on Lake Leelanau, his dream was always to retire there, which he and Nancy did in 2008. He was treasurer of the Lake Leelanau Lake Association, served on the Board of the Cherry Growers Association. Membership in Terrace Park Country Club, Cincinnati,OH and Leland Country Club, Leland, MI enabled him to pursue his passion for tennis and golf. Dan and Nancy enjoyed 20 sunny winters at Heritage Bay, Naples, FL.
Dan is remembered for his joyful spirit, smile, giggle and twinkle in his eye when "messing" with you; providing white knuckled, terror filled tube rides for his nieces; his competitive spirit with any sport, starting with step ball as a young child and advancing to football, tennis, racquetball and the ultimate loves, CARDS and GOLF;
Dan is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy, his 3 sons Bryan (Nancy Nathan) Sweeney, Sean Sweeney and Scott (Mary) Sweeney and his 5 grandchildren, Maeve and Liam Sweeney, Jack Sweeney, Beau and Lucas Sweeney He is also survived by his sister Patricia Sweeney (Tom) Rohs, his brother John (Ciss) Sweeney, and a wonderful extended family. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his brother, Russell William "Bill" Sweeney, JR.
On September 21, 2025, 12 to 3pm at Terrace Park Country Club, Cincinnati, OH, a Celebration of Life will be held. A Remembrance Service for family will be held August 30, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Munson Hospice, 1105 Sixth Street, Traverse City MI, 40684 and/or, the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org and/or the Lake Leelanau Lake Association, PO Box 123, Leland, MI 49654.
