David Kennedy Richards
October 25, 1938 - July 24, 2022
Prairie Village, Kansas - Born in Washington, D.C. to Samuel and Alice Kennedy Richards on October 25, 1938. The family relocated to Kansas City, MO, where he attended St. Elizabeth's Grade School and then Rockhurst High School. He received a degree in Business and Accounting from Rockhurst University in 1960. He then received his law degree from University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1963 and was a member of the Missouri Bar Association.
While he practiced law for several years, his true passion was always in the investment business. He worked for several brokerage companies in Kansas City before establishing his own company, Great American Investors, Inc. in 1989. He enjoyed the challenges and the successes of creating his own business.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Martha; his children who adored him, Lance (Shelby) and Kimberly; grandchildren, Chase, Kylie, Stephanie (Max), AJ (Tannia), Selena, Rylee; and great grandchildren, Luna, Peyton, Julian, Hazel, Brooklyn; his sister, Kathy Richards in San Rafael, CA and brother, Don Richards in Laguna Beach, CA. His sister, Suzanne, predeceased him in death. His extended family, especially Kristen Richards, Speedy Boyd, and Boots Ballard, and many friends and colleagues admired him for his commitment to his family, friends, and the work he loved. He always said he just wanted to do the best he could in life to help others.
He was grateful for his years at Rockhurst University and established an endowed scholarship fund under David K. Richards Rockhurst University where donations can be made in his memory.
There will be a private family memorial service on August 10 with a celebration of his life later in October.

I talked to Dave several years ago. We always laughed about the insanity in the financial services industry. He was a calming influence when I started my career 40 years ago this month. Please accept my sincerest regrets. He was a special guy. We also shared the same nationality. God bless.
