Deborah Scanlon Obituary

Deborah Scanlon
September 29, 1966 - July 6, 2023
Missouri City, Texas - Deborah (Parker Briece) Scanlon, 56, Missouri City, Texas, died unexpectedly vacationing in Europe, July 6, 2023, at Borgo Scopeto Relais near Siena, Italy. Debbie was born September 29, 1966, in North Kansas City, Missouri, to Janette Allen-Parker and Gerald Briece. She graduated with a degree in accounting in 1989 from Northwest Missouri State University, where she was a member of and later president of the Delta Zeta Sorority. She went on to earn CPA certifications in Kansas, Missouri, Texas and Puerto Rico.
Debbie was a recognized national leader in audit, accounting and advisory services for the financial services industry, serving as audit partner and regional industry leader for BKD, LLP's (now FORVIS, LLP) Financial Services Practice.
Debbie served on numerous boards and commissions and was a member of several industry associations, including the Texas Finance Commission, a governor-appointed position; Independent Bankers Association of Texas; Texas Bankers Association; Financial Managers Society; American Bankers Association; Subchapter S Bank Association; American Institute of CPAs, Texas Society of CPAs and Puerto Rico Society of CPAs; and Financial Women in Texas. In recent years, Debbie became a well-known speaker on the topic of women in business and banking.
Debbie recently expanded her role at FORVIS to serve as SKY Advisory Council member, promoting the firm's diversity and inclusion strategies nationwide. Debbie was passionate about her work and the people she worked with, encouraging and shepherding countless colleagues in her firm into senior leadership and partner roles. Debbie was fearless-a topic she often addressed when speaking about women promoting themselves in business. Debbie was compassionate, serving on the Susan G. Komen Houston board of directors for more than a decade and eventually as board president.
Although Debbie was accomplished professionally, she cherished her role as the mother of Jack and Draily, the wife of Pat, and the grandmother of Jesse, Easton and Jayce. She enjoyed celebrating their successes and treasured their love.
The number of friends Debbie has across the nation and the world has warmed the hearts of her family. As Pat said: "I knew Debbie was loved, but these last few days we've been overwhelmed with the love and care so many people have shown to me and my family. The outpouring of messages expressing condolences, admiration and special memories of Debbie has numbered well into the hundreds. It's truly amazing."
Debbie loved life and living it to the fullest with her husband Pat. From fitness to motorcycles to beach adventures and traveling-she was up for it all. She had a sweet soul and was a driving force-a rare combination in today's world-and one that will be missed.
She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Pat Scanlon, of the home; daughter Draily (Justin) Sander, Richmond, Texas; son Jack Scanlon, Missouri City, Texas; brother Orbin Parker III; grandchildren Jessica Sander, Easton Sander and Jayce Sander; uncle William Allen (Antoinette); aunt Nancy Gervey (Larry); and several cousins.
The celebration of Debbie's life will be held at River Pointe Church, 21000 Southwest Freeway, Richmond, Texas 77469, on July 22, 2023, at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial contributions in Debbie's honor to the Susan G. Komen Houston chapter, 13770 Noel Road, Suite 801889, Dallas, Texas 75380. Include code TX301 to ensure donations are sent to the Houston community. Donations may also be made online at www.komen.org/houstonrace

Debbie was an amazing contributor to the Vendors group at the Independent Bankers Association of Texas . She was enthusiastic, intelligent, hard working, with great follow-through. She was respected. For those who had the privilege of working along side her, she was loved. She humanized every thing she put her hand to. She kept her word and always credited the contributions of others. She was funny! She always had a smile and encouragement for everyone. What an honor to have known Debbie.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. I just learned of Deb´s passing. What a shock to us all. Deb was an awesome lady. I had the pleasure of meeting her through Financial Women in Texas conference. She was a dynamic speaker and encouragement to women to excel and succeed in our careers. While she was professional, she was also a blast to "hang out" with. I will miss her contagious smile and awesome laugh. May God bring you peace and comfort at this great time of sorrow, May he give you strength and comfort each day. Take happiness in knowing Deb touched the lives of many and will remain in our hearts forever. God´s Blessings on you today and always! Hugs

Debbie was such an amazingly smart, dedicated, and beautiful individual (inside and out). I had the privilege of meeting and serving with her on Komen-Houston's board and the Race for the Cure over several years. I'll never forget her fun, open, and dedicated nature. She was a true leader who always gave so much and lifted everyone around her.

Deb's early passing is sad for anyone who ever met her. After she moved to TX she was the first partner I looked for at our meetings. She would always light up the room. I will miss the shining star she was and will always remember her. Pat and family my deepest sympathy.

Debbie was the kind of person you could really look up to as a female leader in the firm. She was inspiration to me even without the pleasure of being able to met her face-to-face. Her presence will be missed across the firm.

There aren't words that can ease this sadness. Debbie was a significant force in my younger life at BKD KC. She was foremost my friend. She was also a mentor and example of a strong woman. My heart breaks for Pat, Draily and Jack. I pray to God that somehow they survive, carry on and find some sort of peace.

It's hard to express all that Debbie was to our firm and to her family and friends. I had the privilege to work with Debbie early in her career in KC, then later after she had moved to Houston. Debbie was fearless for sure. But she was also kind, helpful to others, and the one trait I admired the most, she was willing to challenge the status quo, which made our firm a better place. Debbie mentored many people, including my daughter Elise. With nothing to gain, she invested time and talent into Elise, making her a stronger female in her chosen profession. I have no doubt there are many others she invested in and made stronger, better, and more confident. Debbie will be a force that will be difficult to replace. Pat, may God bless your family and grant you strength and peace during this difficult time.

Debbie was a delight to work with. I appreciate her service mentality and willingness to help get to the bottom of accounting issues. We could always count on her. Her positive attitude and responsiveness always made it easy to reach out. I enjoyed the annual Christmas/NY card to see what she was up to and get a little peak in to Debbie beyond professional interactions. She´ll be missed and remembered well.

The day I started with BKD, Debbie was one of the first people I met. She welcomed me as if we were long time friends. She was always so outgoing and happy. She is someone we will not ever forget, as a friend and co-worker. Rest is peace, heaven has found a new Angel.

I remember the first time meeting Deb in person in June of 2021. My dad had recently passed away and I went to Texas for a get away to hang out with her daughter Draily and Cousin Jessica. I had heard tons of stories about how amazing Deb was. I was so excited during that trip to be able to meet Deb in person and spend time with her, Pat and her family. I remember leaving and giving her a huge hug and she said she could not wait for me to come back and visit. Deb will will be truly missed. Rest high in Heaven. Until we meet again. -Cole-
