Donald Moeller Obituary

Dr. Donald and Norma Moeller
December 14, 2022 - December 23, 2022
Overland Park, Kansas - After 66 years of marriage, Norma J. Moeller, 86, and Donald D. Moeller, 88, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away nine days apart. Norma died on December 14, 2022, and Don died on December 23, 2022. A combined service will be held on December 28, 2022, 11:00 AM, at Rainbow Mennonite Church, 1444 Southwest Boulevard, Kansas City, Kansas. The service will also be livestreamed on Rainbow's YouTube channel: @rainbowmennonitechurch6685. Visitation will start an hour before the service and a meal for all will follow in the church fellowship hall.
Norma was born on January 11, 1936, to Martha C. Kaufman and Philip J. Goering, in McPherson, Kansas. She graduated from McPherson High School and McPherson College. She and Don married on June 3, 1957. They lived in Lawrence, Kansas for two years and then spent the rest of their lives in the Kansas City area, except for four years when Don served in the Public Health Service caring for Native Americans in Arizona and New Mexico. Norma was a middle school English and Latin teacher for two years before beginning her life as a mother and homemaker, a job she loved.
Don was born on November 9, 1934, to Irene F. Griffith and Frank C. Moeller, in Lawrence, Kansas. He graduated from Overbrook (Kansas) High School, McPherson College, and University of Kansas Medical School. His life's work was as a gastroenterologist in Kansas City, a profession that he loved.
In 1957, Norma and Don were charter members of Rainbow Mennonite Church in Kansas City, Kansas and attended faithfully for the rest of their lives. Norma was involved in choir, teaching Sunday School and doing committee work. In addition, she had involvements in medical auxiliaries and P.E.O. Her first love was her family and she also enjoyed cooking, baking, bridge and traveling. Don did his internship, residency and fellowship at University of Kansas Medical Center and was president of the Wyandotte County Medical Society and chief of staff at Bethany Medical Center. In addition to spending time with his family, he enjoyed reading, bridge, and traveling.
Norma and Don are survived by three daughters, Teresa King (Dennis), Michele Birzer (Kevin), Laura Sullivan (John) and daughter-in-law, Debbie Moeller. They had fifteen grandchildren including Steven King (Ellen), Scotty King, Sara King Jones (Reese), Rebecca Birzer Smid (Mark), Natalie Birzer Chisam (Matt), Annie Birzer (Joe Workman), Chris Birzer, Matthew Birzer, Daniel Birzer, Remi Moeller, Mack Moeller, Hollis Moeller, Zach Sullivan, Katie Sullivan Cooper (Max), and Nicholas Sullivan. They had six great grandchildren: Jack King, Michael Smid, Molly Smid, Jolene Smid, Luke Smid, Bee Chisam and two more arriving soon. Don's surviving siblings are Gene Moeller, Judy Marten, Debbie Rose and Pam Carpenter. Norma's surviving sibling is Bill Goering.
Norma and Don were preceded in death by their parents, their son, Michael D. Moeller, and Norma's siblings Valera White, Marilyn Becker, Carolyn Becker, Ken Goering and Joan Johnson.
Their family would like to give thanks to Ascend Hospice, especially Leslie, and to Helping Hands Senior Care, especially Maron and Shonda. We are deeply touched by their devotion and professional yet tender care of our mom and dad.
In lieu of flowers, Norma and Don suggested donations to Rainbow Mennonite Church, 1444 Southwest Boulevard, Kansas City, Kansas.
Norma and Don's family loved them deeply and, through their profound sadness, feel blessed they were able to be together until parted by death and know they are safe and at peace in God's hands.
