Overland Park, Kansas - Doris Lucille Meador, 97 Years of an Amazing Life!
Mom passed into Eternal Life, on October 18th, 2021. She was born August 31st, 1924, and raised in northeast Missouri with her 4 sisters and 1 brother on small farms. She moved to Kansas City in 1941 as a 17 year old, determined to make it in the big city. Her early career was working in accounting for the Muehlebach Hotel, & TWA, amongst others. While working she attended Rockhurst College in the evenings, and received an Associates Degree in Accounting. When she came to Kansas City, the U.S. involvement in World War II was just about to start, so there "weren't that many men around to date", she would say. In 1946, after the war had ended, she met our father, William Brooks Meador, at the Pla-Mor dance hall, and they were married in 1952.
Mom and dad raised 3 children together and settled in Overland Park, KS next to Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish. Dad worked at the main Post Office downtown, and mom became a housewife dedicated to her children. Mom always loved living in Johnson County as it was still in its infancy in 1957. The area became a wonderful place to live, send your kids to school, and watch them grow up in a neighborhood filled with children. Sadly, in 1967, dad passed away, leaving mom with young children to raise. She was very involved in their school and church activities at Queen of the Holy Rosary. She was a devoted mother and did an incredible job raising us kids, with all of us attending Kansas State University.
When dad died, mom returned to work as accountant and registrar of Queen of the Holy Rosary School, where her children attended. In 1973, she joined the H.D. Lee jeans company. Mom was a very hard and disciplined employee, working her way up to Jr. Cost Engineer and retiring in 1993, at the age of 69. She then spent about 10 years traveling the country with some of her girlfriends, revisiting Rome, the Grand Canyon, Jackson Hole WY, amongst many other places.
She was a member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church for 63 years, and lived in her house until the very end. Doris was an amazing and generous person, whom everyone loved, and she will be missed greatly. Mom was full of energy, cooking entire holiday meals for the extended family up until about 5 years ago. She was famous for her cherry pie, prayed the Rosary daily, was active in the Altar and Rosary Society, and loved to read the Kansas City Star. MeMa loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren more than anything in the world. May our loving mom, Rest in Peace, and enjoy dancing once again with our dad in Heaven!
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, William Brooks Meador; parents, Annie and Joe Early; her brother, Bill Early; her sisters, Mary Catherine Slaughter and Gerry Boucher; her son-in-law, Dave Niehaus, along with many other loved ones.
She is survived by daughter, Carol Meador Niehaus of Grandview, MO; son, Bill Meador of Roeland Park, KS; and daughter, Judy Meador Rehmert (Rory) of Hoover, AL. Seven grandchildren who know her as their beloved "MeMa": Teresa (Brandon) Geneser of Land O' Lakes, FL, Jennifer Buehler (Andrew) Irizarry of Springfield, MO, Brock (Shevonne) Niehaus of Dupont, WA, Brandon Niehaus of Kansas City, MO, Amanda (Nathan) Welch of Woodinville, WA, Bailey (Creighton) Rhodes of Hoover, AL, Molly Rehmert of Hoover, AL and eight great-grandchildren: Gavin and Jadyn Geneser, Tyler and Nathalia Niehaus, Liam Irizarry, Eleanor and Morgan Rhodes, Lucille Welch and sisters, Anna Jean Bradley of Overland Park, KS and Betty Donahue of Carrollton, TX.
Her visitation service will be from 6-8pm, with the Rosary beginning at 6pm on Thursday, October 28th at McGilley and Hoge Memorial Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS 66204. The funeral Mass will be held at 10am on Friday, October 29th at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 7023 W. 71st St., Overland Park, KS 66204 with burial to follow in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.
