Dorothy Barrett Obituary

Dorothy Feaster Barrett, 97, of Gladstone, MO, passed away April 3, 2009. Dorothy Lucille was born May 12, 1911 in Bound Brook, New Jersey to William Henry and Lottie Mae (Holtzman) Feaster. She had one brother, Melvin Holtzman Feaster. Dorothy began working for AT&T around 1927, retiring in July 1961. Dorothy met her husband, Carroll Lewis Barrett, while working for AT&T. They married in Hackensack, New Jersey on October 23, 1953. They moved to Gladstone in 1957. They were married 14 years until his death in 1967. He was the love of her life. Dorothy was interested in genealogy and history. She was the founding Regent of the William Boydston Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. The first meeting was held on December 1, 1963. She was also a member of the following: National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Missouri State Society, National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, Hereditary Order Of The First Families Of Massachusetts, Inc., National Society of the United States Daughters of 1812, State of Missouri James Kearney Chapter, National Society Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, and The Society of the Descendants of the Colonial Clergy. As a member of the Gladstone Woman's City Club, Dorothy was the chairperson of the club project committee, which organized and served the first "Meals on Wheels" north of the river on October 28, 1964. Those first meals cost 15 cents. Dorothy spent the last 20 years or so home bound. She did not drive and relied on the friendships of Margaret Olsen and Jim Krisman. Margaret assisted with groceries and errands. Jim made her part of his family, including her for holidays and special occasions. Lunch on Saturdays was part of their routine together. Dorothy depended on Jim and he never let her down. Annual visits from her niece Susan and her family of Columbia, MD, were a much anticipated event. Susan's last visit was just last week, and was described by Dorothy as "very loving." Dorothy was a strong, independent, spirited, and charming woman. She lived alone until her fall three months ago. All who knew her were blessed to have done so. She will be greatly missed. Her niece Susan Murray and husband Frank, their daughter and Dorothy's great niece Erica survive Dorothy. Others include a niece by marriage, Yvonne Feaster, a cousin Ron Shappella, great niece Laura Bowden, great nephew Seth Feaster, and great great niece Lily Feaster. Her Kansas City family was Jim Krisman and family, Margaret Olsen, Tracy Scavuzzo, Lawrence Jones, and Mark and Rebecca Hittner. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, or the Humane Society. Funeral Services for Dorothy will be held at 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 7, at D. W. Newcomer's Sons White Chapel Funeral Home, 6600 N. Antioch, Gladstone, MO 64119. Visitation will be from 4-5 p.m., at the Chapel, one hour prior to the funeral. A reception will follow at the Chapel, directly following the service. Burial will be in Williamstown, PA, at a later date. Arr. D.W. Newcomer's Sons White Chapel Funeral Home, 816-452-8419.
