We're saddened by the news of the tragic death of Mrs. Etta and her husband. Etta and Ken gave breath to a poem by Sonia Sanchez entitled “ This is Not a Small Voice “. In the poem Sanchez says “This is not a small love...” Etta and Ken were not a small love. Their love spilled out of their home into the communities where they lived, into the places where they worshipped, and the places that they worked. Their love entered every door that they walked through offering humanity over judgment. It will transcend the grave and forever embrace. Family, may this be your comfort. It is a gift from God.

Words are not enough, but I have to tell you how much our friendship meant. When you showed up in Shreveport during my election, my heart was ecstatic and the memories of our times together were renewed! I had not known how close I was to your grandmother in Marshall, Texas. That weekend was a throw back to our days at TSU, in New Orleans and on Griggs. I didn't even care that I lost my election miserably, because I was with my friends. I've since moved back to Houston, where it all began. Your beautiful spirit touched all of us. I'm missing you and the plans we were making are on hold until we meet again. Still can't believe this is true!!! My emotions are so heavy!!! Regardless of circumstances Etta always smiled and had a heart of gold. She has had such a big influence on my life. We were giggle buddies. She was my 1st friend at Texas Southern University. She along with Joyce Flournoy Gibson were my 1st roommates. In March 1973 she introduced me to my husband of 45 years. She was one of my beautiful line sisters as we pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She and my Sorors helped me campaign for Ms. TSU and she was my Maiden of Honor at the Coronation in1974. Too any good times to post here. Even though we went our separate ways through life and touched bases occasionally, never have I forgotten, EVER!!!! I will love and appreciate you Etta until I too am laid to rest. My most sincere condolences to Etta and Kenneth's family members, friends and all who know and love them. Amen.
