Gilbert Stack Obituary

1913-2007 Father Gilbert Stack, O.S.B., 94, Roman Catholic priest and monk of Conception Abbey, died Sunday, 30 September 2007. Father Gilbert (Garrett Michael) Stack, the son of William and Elizabeth (Gaughan) Stack, was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on 28 August 1913. He was baptized at Assumption Church and attended St. Francis Xavier Elementary School, Rockhurst High School, and Conception College, Conception, Missouri. He entered the novitiate of Conception Abbey in 1933 and professed vows on 3 September 1934. He also attended St. Benedict's College, Atchison, Kansas, and the state teachers' college in Maryville. He was ordained to the priesthood on 6 January 1939. Since 1994, Father Gilbert has enjoyed semi- retirement. Earlier this year, Father Gilbert's declining health necessitated his move to the abbey infirmary. A fracture to his leg and other problems led to his admission to the hospital and a full-care nursing residence, where he died peacefully on Sunday morning. Father Gilbert is survived by his monastic community and by his nephews and nieces: Mr. William G. Stack of Annandale, VA; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. (Colleen) Stack of Kansas City, MO; Mr. and Mrs. John (Virginia) Zumalt of Shawnee, KS; Mrs. Mary C. Masucci of Overland Park, KS; and Mrs. David (Lori) Scott of Houston, TX. Vespers of the Departed will be sung at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2; A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 o'clock on Wednesday morning, 3 October 2007 at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Conception, Missouri. Price Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I was a volunteer at Bethlehem in 72, and travelled and assisted Father with his tour to the Holy Land & Rome with Father that year. I will never forget the morning masses at Bethelehem, Christmas eve in the Cave, the retreats, being a cave guide, the quiet time at the edge of the canyon, Father's wise counsel, & Mrs. Roger's food. Father was always a man on a mission, always had a new project, and could drive down that treacherous dirt road in his old Oldsmobile with NASCAR agility. Both he and his dreams for Bethlehem impacted so many who were discerning their own vocations. May we always remember how much one man's life can effect us all. May God grant him peace and joy!

My children were baptized by Father Gilbert at Bethlehem in the cave when my brother was a volunteer. My condolences to the family. Father is certainly with God in heaven. My prayers are with you.

I was one of the volunteers in the summer of 68. Returned after graduating high school in 69, stayed for 1 1/2 years.
Father Gilbert, you may now be with God, you're gone from the earth, but will never be forgotten.
My prayers to the remainder of the family
