Hugh Barry Obituary

Hugh John Barry, 88, passed away November 14, 2005, at the Homestead of Leawood, where he lived for the past four years. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., with Rosary Recitation at 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 16, at Saint Peter's Catholic Church, Meyer Boulevard and Holmes Road. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 17, at the church. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Saint Peter's Legacy Fund at St. Peter's Church, 815 East Meyer Boulevard, Kansas City, MO 64131. Hugh was born October 27, 1917, in Kansas City, MO, the son of John and Anna Marie (Doherty) Barry. He served in the US Army during World War II, earning four bronze stars. Hugh worked as a Switchman for 40 years, retiring in 1979 from the Burlington Northern Railroad. He was a member of Saint Peter's Catholic Church and the United Transportation Union. Through long hours at work and his countless carpentry and home improvement projects, Hugh drew great satisfaction from his ability to provide educational opportunities and a comfortable home for his beloved family. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Jack; and two sisters, Helen and Katherine. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Isabelle Byrne Barry, of the home; eight children and spouses, Dr. Barbara Russell and Dr. Wes Russell, Selbina, MO; Hugh Barry, Jr. and Irene Barry, Iowa City, IA, Mary Kay Clune and Kevin Clune, Kansas City, MO, Dr. Timothy Barry and Kathy Barry, Latrhop, MO, Diana Brady and Mike Brady, Leawood, KS, Alan Barry, Kansas City, MO, Rev. Bernard Barry, SJ, Bronx, NY, and Patrick Barry, Kansas City, MO; 21 grandchildren, John, Rachel, Abigail, Tom, Elizabeth, Hugh III, Brian, Patrick, Sean, Eileen, Matthew, Meghan, Connor, Kathleen, Devin, Kyle, Garet, Colleen, Patricia, Colin and Shannon. He also leaves a sister, Mary Morgan, Kansas City, MO. Hugh's family members wish to thank the staff of Homestead Assisted Living for their devoted care for Hugh during the past four years.
