Jay Hyde Obituary

Jay C. Hyde, 78, of KCMO, passed away Friday, Feb. 26, 2009. A Memorial service to celebrate Jay's life will be 3 p.m., Mon., March 2, at Park Lawn Funeral Home, 8251 Hillcrest Rd., KCMO. Dontations, in lieu of flowers, to the VFW Hughes Marvin Post, 13137 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, MO, 64147. He was born July 10, 1930 in Buffalo, NY to Cleon and Hazel Hyde. Jay attended high school in Buffalo, NY, and later earned his GED degree. Jay and Willa were married April 21, 1956. Jay enlisted in the Air Force in 1947, and served 21 years. He served in Korea and Vietnam, and the family joined him on a tour in France for two years. After retiring from the Air Force, the family moved to Kansas City in 1968. Jay was a rabid KC Chiefs fan, holding season tickets 27 years in the 'new' stadium. Jay worked in the Kansas City area until he retired in 1994. During that time and after he retired he was a volunteer. He was a shuttle driver at the VA Medical Center. He served almost every office in the Air Force Sergeants Chapter 804. He was the Master of Ceremonies for all their Floor Shows. He called Bar Bingo at the Club for many years. He was the Chapter Treasurer when he passed away. He also served in many offices in the Air Force Sergeants Association Division 8 and is an International Air Force Sergeants Association Lifetime Trustee. He was a lifetime member of the Dwight Cowles American Legion Post 370 Overland Park, KS. He was the VFW Hughes Marvin Post Quartermaster. He took that position seriously and that took a lot of time. Some weeks he was there almost every day. The VFW was Jay and Wila's home away from home. Thanks to Dennis and Linda Kort for all the support they gave him all those years. Jay was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Willa, of the home, daughter Janie and Larry Hodges, Shawnee, KS, daughter Melissa and Mark Semke, KCMO; grandchildren Phillip and Pam Hodges, Jill and David McCalman III, and brother Paul Hyde of Buffalo, NY, and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the Overland Park Regional Medical Center, ICU Nurses, Chaplain and staff for their efforts, compassion, and support. Arr. Park Lawn Funeral Home, 816-523-1234.

Willa and Family,

Words cannot express the sorrow that you must feel. I only hope that you will allow me to share this time of pain with you. Jay was indeed one of the finest gentlemen that I have had the pleasure of knowing, he was always there and doing what needed to be done and never complaining, He was my friend and I shall miss him.

Due to a recent illness and Cataract Surgery this week I will not be able to be there except in spirit. I will always treasure the times we spent together.

Dear Willa and family: I am so sorry for your loss. Jay was a one-of-a-kind gentleman. I can see my dad and Jay sitting together and chatting about the day and AFSA. He will be dearly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you face this difficult time. Just think though, my dad and Jay are now up in heaven having a good ole time chatting about AFSA and their families with one another. Peace and love be with you now and forever.

Willa and family...words can never express the sorrow we, too, feel at this grievous time. Marilyn and I both have had the highest respect for Jay, and for me, it was an honor to serve in Post 7900 with him. May his soul rest in peace with our Almighty God, and may you and your family find the strength to cope with this untimely loss.

I am sorry to learn of Jay's passing. In my years of civilian work at Richards-Gebaur AFB, I have never worked with a more enthusiastic, energetic or nicer person than Jay. He was always smoothing out rough edges for his fellow man. Rest in Peace, Jay.
