JOHN GORDON BENNETT

1947 - 2014

John Gordon Bennett, 66, passed away Friday, July 25, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, MO. He was born October 6, 1947 in Ottawa, KS. Due to cerebral palsy, he spent much of his life living in special care settings that provided the physical and emotional support necessary for him to best direct and determine his daily activities. For the past twenty years, he has resided with and been supported by the dedicated staff of Community Living Opportunities. John was a great lover of country music and all sports. He especially enjoyed trips to the Grand Ole Opry, Branson, MO, KC T-Bones games, and numerous trips to Royals Stadium where he particularly loved opening day. Despite being confined to a wheelchair and having many physical limitations, John lived a meaningful, inspiring life. Above all, he cherished his family and friends (including CLO caretakers.) He will be remembered for his ever present smile and generous heart. He is preceded in death by his father, Frank Ransom Bennett Jr. He is survived by his mother, Beverly (Stucker) Bennett of Aberdeen Village, Olathe; brothers Frank of Washington, D.C. and Davis of Colorado Springs, CO; sister Barbara Deacon of Bristol, RI; nephews Daniel Deacon of Duxbury, MA and Matthew Deacon of Bend, OR; great niece Elle Deacon and great-nephew Ransom Bennett Deacon; uncle Jep Bennett of Lawrence and numerous cousins. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Sunday, August 24, at First Baptist Church, Ottawa, Kansas.
